The Met Gala Goes To Camp: Here's All The Over-the-Top Looks From The Red Carpet

Photo: Dia Dipasupil/Getty Images.
We've researched the theme, predicted what celebrities will wear on the red carpet, and Insta-stalked Lady Gaga for so long that we're starting to see platforms in our sleep. The only thing left to do is watch the red carpet. Yep, the First Monday in May is finally here, and it's time to welcome the biggest, most meticulously planned night in fashion: The Met Gala.
The Met Gala kickstarts a four-month-long exhibit put on by the Costume Institute at New York City's Metropolitan Museum of Art. This year's theme, based on Susan Sontag's 1964 essay, "Camp: Notes On Fashion", is all about "the love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration." So naturally, we're expecting attendees to go completely over the top with their red carpet looks. After all, if Cardi B and Rihanna can take even a Catholic-themed dress code and make it fashion, we can't imagine what they'll do with a theme literally dedicated to outrageousness.

With Lady Gaga's four looks leading the way, here's how this year's guest list is bringing camp to life at tonight's Met Gala red carpet.

Lana Condor in Giambattista Valli Couture

To All The Boys [She's] Loved Before, you seriously missed out because Lana Condor looked like an absolute princess donning a cotton candy-colored Giambattista Valli number — off-the-shoulder, tulle train, poof sleeves and all.

Lady Gaga in Brandon Maxwell

Among the first to arrive, co-host and queen of camp Lady Gaga really, really made an entrance. Not only did she show up in a next-level hot pink parachute coat, of which was custom made for her by designer, Brandon Maxwell, she casually stripped down — on the pink carpet — into the ultimate LBD.

Billy Porter in The Blonds

Let's get one thing straight: Billy Porter knows how to enter a room. Carried in Cleopatra-style on an Egyptian throne built for a queen, this custom gold look by The Blonds, complete with freakin' wings, might just have won the carpet.

Alessandro Michele and Harry Styles in Gucci

Are these guys BFFs? Or do they both just love ruffles? Either way, Gucci Creative Director Alessandro Michele and Met Gala co-host Harry Styles look like they’re walking into the most elevated semi-formal that we could ever hope for.

Kim Kardashian West in Mugler

Stepping out of the ocean and onto the red carpet is the official Kim Kardashian-West way to do the Met Gala. Sporting wet hair (similar to this month's cover of Vogue), KKW wore designer Thierry Mugler's first design for his eponymous label in 20 years.

J. Lo in Versace

We'll always love this. J. Lo channeled Whitney Houston in The Bodyguard with this diamond-encrusted headpiece and matching fringe body-con gown. It's safe to say that we all want to be A.Rod right now.

Kylie Jenner in Versace

Sure, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry are the unofficial queens of modern camp, but now that we've seen this lavender Versace number on Kylie Jenner, we're thinking that they've got some serious, fluffy competition.

Cole Sprouse & Lili Reinhart

And the winner for most camp couple goes to... Bughead. Lili, who played it safe at last year's Met Gala, went full Let Them Eat Cake in this aquamarine short set, while her Riverdale -and-real-life beau Cole goofs it up, as he does, in a Ferragamo suit inspired by an archival shoe circa 1938.

Ariana Grande's ponytail just met its match — and it comes in the form of two latex pigtails-turned-whips on Tessa Thompson.

Cardi B in Thom Browne

Cardi B gives us the grand camp finale that we wished for. Designer Thom Browne created a fantastical red feathered gown with an extra large (and round) train. Little mermaid lobster goals.

Hailey Bieber in Alexander Wang

No one who's playing it safe would show up on a bubblegum pink carpet wearing... bubblegum pink. Thanks to this low-back sequin gown and bedazzled thong by Alexander Wang, Hailey Bieber didn't blend in and disappear. At all!

Katy Perry in Moschino

Katy Perry couldn't just let Lady Gaga out-stunt her, could she? Wearing a Beauty and the Beast-inspired Moschino dress stacked with a fully-lit up chandelier headpiece, she's giving the co-host a run for her money. (And possibly testing nearby sprinklers, too.)

Saoirse Ronan in Gucci

Daenerys is cool and all, but after seeing Saoirse Ronan don this dragon-esque Gucci frock on the pink carpet, we can't help but think that there's a new Mother of Dragons. Dracarys!

Miley Cyrus in Saint Laurent

Miley Cyrus has tried out every trend at least once, but we can't help but think that 80s punk (by Saint Laurent) is her best one yet, even if it's not really all that camp.

Hamish Bowles in Maison Margiela.

Celine Dion in Oscar de la Renta

Janelle Monae in Christian Siriano

This one-of-a-kind, possibly battery-operated Christian Siriano original is a not-so-subtle wink to the night's theme.

Winnie Harlow

Extravagant headpieces and feather boas are the go-tos for the camp theme. Winnie Harlow stuns in a gold ensemble that bares much. Inspired by the Caribbean Carnival, she’s the peacock queen of space tonight.

Ciara in Dundas

Good luck leveling up any higher than Ciara, because this out-of-this-world afro is next level. Oh, and her custom Dundas gown isn't half bad either.

Ezra Miller in Burberry

Ezra Miller delighted on the pink carpet tonight in a custom Burberry pinstriped suit. Unlike all of the other suits that hit the Met steps, this one came with an exaggerated cape and studded corset. To further solidify the look? Five extra eyes for optimal exhibition viewing.
