Score The Valentine-Worthy Card Set We’re Crushing On sugar-paper One of our favorite things about Valentine’s Day is that it's the most card-centric of all the major holidays. Think about it, you’ve probably been swapping heart-shaped notes (possibly with Ninja Turtles on them) since pre-school. So don't let e-cards interrupt this long, lovely tradition. Uphold the heritage with this sweet, chic, aw-evoking 5-card set from Sugar Paper. Each one has been printed by hand on an antique letterpress and has a different adorable message for every kind of valentine. And those gorge envelopes? Be still our pattern-loving hearts. The collection is one piece of a project that aims to inspire creativity and raise funds for arts in high schools. Students get to design their own Vans, with a chance to win $50,000 towards their high school arts program. To get the creative juices flowing, the slip-on maestros invited celebs, designers, and bloggers to get their DIY on and design a custom pair. The result: some insanely cool kicks. We're not so sure what's going on with Conan's masterpiece, but our faves includes Peter Som's floral-packed design and the geometrical beauties designed by Honestly WTF's Erica Coffman.

Take a look-see and let us know which Vans you'd rock.

The Anna Sui And Tumi Collab Helps You Up Your Airport Style

In case you missed the subtle hint that we could use a vacation, here's something to make our intentions even more transparent. Just in time for rolling our Vitamin D-deprived selves onto the tarmac, reliable luggage brand Tumi has introduced a collaboration with Anna Sui. Incorporating Sui's ultra-sweet flare with Tumi's sturdy design for keeping our sandals and sunscreen secure in one casing, the newest designs are just right for traveling without looking like a schlub.

First previewed on the spring '12 runway, the collection of cases and carryalls feature Sui's lavender winged design that's, no doubt, most appealing to the girly girls of the bunch. Let's face it, airport street style can be pretty competitive these days, so you might as well ditch the crumby old wheelie for something with a little more pep. Whether you're heading to the tropics or to Fashion Week, this little pretty can fly right by your side. Pick up your own, or try your luck — they're giving one away here!

Camo Brogues? Raffia Slippers? This Cult Shoe Line Has 'Em All shoe brand Del Toro, which has amassed a cult following from fashion editors and buyers alike. The spring '12 lookbook could serve as a manual for showing waspy-punk inspired females and fellas how to pull together a dapper, fresh look that paints outside the lines of the yawn-worthy norm. Of course, the signature Del Toro Prince Albert Slipper Loafer is still in the mix, but—yes!—available in even a more colorful mix of bright solids and fun patterns like leopard, zebra, military chic camo, and raffia. But, even more exciting, the line is clearly expanding from just slippers—hello bold wingtips. And they look like they'd be the spike to the proverbial punch at any party, if founder and designer Matthew Chevallard and his gang, lounging like a Tommy Hilfiger ad on chronic in these snaps, are anything to go by. We'll take a (velvet) hit.

Turn The Radio Up, Roll The Windows Down: We Found Our New Joy-Ride Jam

With SXSW quickly approaching, we're making a mental list of all the bands we're pining to see, and Delta Spirit is definitely in our top five. Now, after hearing their latest song "California," we're even more amped. The SoCal quintet have shifted away from their previous Americana/Folk style and — in true Cali fashion — added some sun and surf to the mix (and we like it!).

Taking a cue from indie greats like Arcade Fire and TV on the Radio, DS has added some swirling synths and head-bobbing beats into what is sure to be the new gem of West Coast jams (and our new fave song to play on repeat). "California" finds the dream mix of mellow guitar riffs and catchy ooo-hoos, making their new sound perfect for some beers and bon-fire time on the beach or just a cruise down the PCH — with the windows down, of course.

Take a listen to "California" and you'll see their third LP when it drops March 13.

Street Style: Wear Your Fun, Printed Outerwear While You Still Can!

Who she is: Gabrielle
Where we spotted her: On State Street.
Why we love her: Chicagoans know that when we get a day or two of good weather, we have to take advantage of it. Gabrielle is no exception—she's hip to the fact that heavy parkas for 10-degrees-below-zero days don't come in the fun, vibrant prints we wish they would. We love her oversized cardigan, and pairing it with a chambray shirt and a high waist was a chic choice. Here's hoping we've got more days like these ahead of us!

Aww Alert: There's Real BF & BFF Love Aplenty In This Maison Kitsuné Shoot Maison Kitsuné's latest shoot (in conjunction with their album release Feb 14, natch), you'd think V-Day came a bit early this year. Those P.Y.T.s modeling covetably cute Parisienne striped tops, adorbs tees, and – aww – berets are real BFFs and gals about town Caroline Walker and Annabelle Dexter Jones. Cute. But cuter still is the fact that the man behind the camera is none other than graffiti artist, hotelier, club impresario, and – most importantly – Annabelle's main squeeze, André Saraiva. The already smile-inducing teen-scrapbook-style lookbook becomes even more lovable when you consider that Ronson clan member Annabelle and the foxy André actually met for the first time on a photoshoot for Jalouse a few years back. Style Syllabus: Super Bowl Salads (That Won't Make You Sad) Super Bowl parties, make this year different and do something about it yourself. Show up with something light and festive in hand, and wings-laden table and party guests with both thank you.

Your surprising-but-delicious solution: salad recipes that won't make you wish your greens were actually a tower of pigs-in-a-blanket. Easy, healthy, and fresh, these are great accompaniments to the usual mix, and will be a nice relief served alongside belly-filling beers. And as an extra perk, they’re easy to throw together last-minute, and vegetarian to boot. At least in this game, everyone wins!

Untitled-1Beet Salad — Colorful and filling, beets are unexpected, flavorful additions to this classic salad.

Ingredients
Arugula
4 to 5 Beets
Goat cheese
Walnuts
Dressing of choice (we recommend Brianna’s Poppy Seed available at Trader Joe’s)

Steps
Scrub and wash beets, and then cut in half. Fill a saucepan with water and place the beets inside, making sure that the water completely covers the beets. Boil water and cook for 20-30 minutes until the beets are tender. Drain, cool, and slice.

Throw together arugula, walnuts, and dressing in a large bowl. Add sliced beets and sprinkle goat cheese crumbles on top.

Where I Was From Takes The Guesswork Out Of Buying & Styling Vintage

Where I Was From, a new online vintage boutique, is changing the retro-hunting game in its entirety. This new e-shop will have you rethinking how you buy and style your vintage wares, starting with some pretty amazing inspirational shots. The Williamsburg, Brooklyn company is taking their clothes out of the über-manufactured studio setting and instead showcasing them IRL, in a way that satisfies both our desire to look at beautiful photos and our want need to buy everything in them.

The brainchild of Claire Lampert, the former design director of Bodkin, the site's every detail clearly reflects the taste and connoisseurship of an industry veteran. From the collection of menswear-inspired pieces to the laid-back denim-on-denim layering featured in the shots, the site makes the sometimes-difficult process of modernizing vintage more simple — and chic. We especially love how they used the patchwork Levi's on both male and female models, and gave a new definition to his-and-hers styling.

With this dream-come-true addition to the e-commerce world, you're one click away from bringing the items (or complete looks, we aren't judging) into your own romp-in-the-woods adventure. Visit the just-launched Where I Was From now for one-of-a-kind vintage Norma Kamali, Pendleton, Dior, and more, plus inspiration on how to wear it all.

A Gorgeous Crimson Cake Inspired By Valentino? Color Us Obsessed!

We love when fashion collides with other cultural forces: music, dance, photography, you name it. But aside from a few fancy-pants cupcakes, we didn't really expect food and couture to mingle anytime soon. Turns out, we were wrong.

Leave it to local blogger and baker extraordinaire Apollinas to literally knock our socks off with a four-layer cake inspired by a Valentino red dress — which means it's enrobed in an insanely rich shade of crimson ganache and bedecked with bows. The frock has been sported by the likes of Alexa Chung and Rachel Weisz, but we have to say that it looks every bit as enticing in an edible format. (Apollinas)

Must Watch: Sofia Coppola's Marni for H&M Commercial

Just in case you needed yet another reason to be beside-yourself-excited for the H&M for Marni launch (debuting March 3rd!), we've got a little Friday treat for 'ya with Sofia Coppola's new H&M for Marni commercial. We first heard about the director/Swedish mega-brand collab back in December, and Coppola's first fashion film project does not disappoint.

The short was shot at a picturesque villa in Marrakech that the director had visited with friends, and has all the usual suspects of a Coppola flick: a scene-stealing up-and-coming leading lady (cue British actress Imogen Poots), gaggles of beautiful models and socialites (we spotted Annabelle Dexter Jones and Liu Wen) lounging around and getting swept up into an all-day rager, impeccably styled clothes (we'll take one of each, please) and — of course — a killer soundtrack. We don't know about you, but we're now jonesing for a Moroccan weekend jaunt, ASAP. (Fashionista)

Tell us what you think of the director's first foray in fashion flicks. Should she keep 'em coming or stick to features?

Designers "Dress" Rooney Mara For The Super Bowl Besides having The Bangs That Changed Everything and Lots Of Dresses With Cut-Outs, Rooney Mara also has The Dad With The Football Team, with her father, Chris Mara, acting as vice president of player evaluation for the New York Giants, who will be playing this Sunday in the Super Bowl.

We're assuming that the lil' lady-goth will be in attendance, though we — and the rest of the fashion industry — don't expect her to attend in the requisite sweats-and-a-beer-helmet uniform. With all the sports-inspired looks on the runway recently, it's not too hard to imagine Rooney in something a little more au courant, but leave it to some Paris designers to consider a bedazzled blazer (with no shirt), a poncho, and a swim cap, as appropriate Super Bowl garb. Party Pics! The Hottest Housewarming Party We've Attended Yet an apartment building with more lore than Hancock Park's El Royale tower. This indie abode has housed some of Hollywood's most sought-after creatives — Mae West, Clark Gable, Uma Thurman, and Cameron Diaz have all called the Spanish castle home at one point or another. And stories of ghosts and scandals abound: An oil heiress once left the building in nothing but her panties and a feather boa, while another gutsy tenant was evicted for running a gambling ring out of the garage.

When our very own Patrick Yee was given the keys to this haute high-rise, moving back in with his college pal, Wren designer Melissa Coker, we knew it was time to plan a good old house party. Spectacular views and ultra-glam art set the bewitching backdrops for an unforgettable evening of great convos and even better friends. Obviously, we snapped pics galore, so indulge your inner voyeur and take a gander at the good times had by all, in one of the most exceptional edifices in town. 01_IMG_6485

My Style: It Jeweler Sara Beltran's Beachy-Chic Chelsea Crib jewelry designer Sara Beltran, the creative genius behind Dezso (or "desire" in Latin). Desire indeed. The line (an instant obsession of glossy editors and Barneys' buyers) consists of simple, well-made bracelets, necklaces, and earrings that channel her love of the ocean, her Mexican upbringing, and Jaipur, India, where she just opened up a design studio. In a time when jewelry can feel limited to large impact pieces, Beltran's spare collection stands out, an aesthetic that translates to her home life as well. We visited her Chelsea casa and discovered a total oasis of calm away from the overzealous galleristas below — rustic and earthy, clean and subtly sophisticated, this crib is one chic getaway. Of course, we didn't leave without some snaps of Beltran's personal style, too. You can bet her ensembles are as cleverly understated as her line, even though she rocks a Birkin on the reg. We just hope it doesn't get sandy.

Gwyneth Gushes: What It's Like To Be Shot For The Cover Of A Magazine Perhaps you've forgotten that the half-nakie blonde bombshell on the cover of Harper's Bazaar also happens to be the same singin', dancin', cookin', and sometimes goofy GOOP lady, as well. Today we were reminded of this salient fact when we caught wind of the behind-the-scenes story that captures all the action of the cover shoot — from racks upon racks upon racks of wardrobe options (yes, we die) to beauty touch up after touch up.

One of our favorite moments? When the nearly 40-year old unintentionally presents a rather close competition of "Who Wore It Better" against Karlie Kloss—they both wore the same Anthony Vaccarello dress. While we wont pick a winner (because, well, it's nearly impossible), stylist Andrew Richardson did point out that Gwyn's overall outfits called for a more mature woman. "She's a gorgeous woman who is confident in her body, and I think it's much sexier to see these looks on her, rather than a 19-year-old model," he says. While the leading lady admits that she's not accustomed to such steamy attire, even behind the scenes, we don't suspect for a second that she's anything but a natural. Click over to see even more of the candid (and not so candid) shots. (GOOP)

Help This Local Blogger (& R29 Fave!) Go Head To Head With The Sartorialist We had a hunch that it wouldn’t take long for local fashion blogger Tanesha Awasthi from Girl With Curves to take off since she launched her site just last February.

And now the curvy beauty, who we profiled in an inspiring 1 Girl, 4 Looks feature, is up for a big-deal "Bloggie" award!

And not only is she competing in the fashion category of the Bloggies (the official name is Weblog Awards...how very 1.0!), she's also, impressively, up against Internet giants The Sartorialist and Cupcakes and Cashmere.

Want to help her beat 'em all? Simply head over here, scroll to the Best Fashion or Beauty Weblog category, click the circle to choose Girl with Curves, submit your email at the bottom of the form, and confirm your vote via email. Easy-peasy.

C'mon folks, we couldn't nab that Superbowl trophy, the least we can do is bring a Bloggie award back to the Bay.

Street Style: Rock A Crazy-Cool Print Without Looking Crazy

Who she is: Maggie
Where we spotted her: Melrose Avenue
Why we love her: You can tell just by looking at this fair lady that she's comfortable in her own skin, and has her style-sense down pat. It's not every day that you see someone rock ikat pants, and even more rare to actually see someone make it work! The sweet lil' vintage sweater and beaten-up boots seal the deal on this classic Cali beauty's stamp of approval.

Street Style: Take An NYC Standby Up A Notch

The "New Yorkers always wear black" myth resonates most loudly during winter. Sometimes it's true, we feel a distinct pull towards dark colors, often rushing to the dressing room with various garments in the same hue. It's not necessarily a purposeful thing, but test our weekly wardrobe and you'll find the shade pervasive in our looks (and closets).

So, while it's not unusual to peep a great all-black ensemble on these streets, model Rachel Scott got our attention for nailing the look in an entirely effortless way. Black leggings? Check. Black lace up boots? Check. Long black coat, bag, and scarf? Check and check and check. What really works here is the variation of shades and textures, with Rachel's sheer, navy dress. We love the way color combo and the lightness of the fabric really breaks up the rest of her outfit. Plus, there's no better way to highlight a perfect red lip than with the NYC uniform. We're into it— so sue us!

Sexy Scents That Are Proven To Seduce The link between seduction and smell is as old as civilization itself. According to the story of Cleopatra, not one but two great leaders of the ancient Roman Empire fell under her spell after smelling her perfumed concoctions. I Love My... Mandy Coon Bunny Bag Leila Brillson is a writer based in NYC, and has written for Blackbook, MTV, and Interview, as well as Refinery29. She tweets here.

I don't know if you have heard about this, but Zooey Deschanel was seen with a bunny for a bag. And shortly thereafter, Suri Cruise was spotted toting the same lapin. So, maybe the Mandy Coon Ginny Bag has landed me in company I don't usually keep (Zooey, Suri, and I probably have very little to talk about), but I love the little lop-eared sucker so much. And for two reasons.

The tabloids jumped on ZD for being too precious, and my friends accused me of the same. When I walk into a bar or event carrying my buddy, they roll their eyes in unison. I'm not a cutesy girl. Nothing I do is adorable/twee/sugar-coated, so the bag, with its little button eyes, seems a little incongruous. But I once had the opportunity to ask Mandy Coon about the bag, and its origins are anything but sweet: Inspired by the Shirley MacLaine character in the film Some Came Running, the down-and-out heroine carries around a beat-up old bunny from whence she pulls out her compact and makeup. That type of rough and tumble, comfort-object-as-necessity mentality appeals to me. The girlish items suddenly take on a real-world purpose, and clutching a small, innocent shape filled with "grown-up" objects is somehow satisfying. But the bag is made out of black leather, like Bugs going all S&M, so it mixes something softer and more touchable with an edge. Oh, I also love Shirley MacLaine, too.

But my second reason is purely aesthetic. The bag is a rabbit. With little button eyes and embroidered ears and funny little feet. I love having it hang out with me on my way around the city, like a grown-up imaginary friend. Hopping around the city on my own can really feel isolating, especially with such a frenetic schedule, but then I look down at his (it is a him, by the by) wrinkled little nose and I think, "Are you ready to go Bunny? Ok, me too." And there we are, just a girl and her bunny.

Indulge Your Inner Goth With This Moody Nail Polish Set

To quote the late, great, Lisa "Left Eye" Lopez, "they say my life is 10 shades of gray" — or rather, our nail polishes are. The Dickensian Edition by StrangeBeautiful is a collection of 10 polishes in varying shades of grays and blacks. Creator Jane Schub says she was inspired by Charles Dickens, the Brothers Grimm, Edward Gorey's The Loathsome Couple, a "velvety lump of coal, and the dull, yet metallic shards of broken shale that line the hills of the Hudson Valley."

While we wouldn't go so far as to wax poetic on all things bleak and foreboding, we are kind of digging the gothic polishes. Each metallic hue is indeed different than the last, although most of the variations are quite subtle. A range of shimmers help transform the shades with a washed-out rainbow of undertones, from lilac and mauve to greenish-gold. There's no denying the polishes are great quality — super-opaque, multi-dimensional shimmer, not easily chipped — but we're not sure we can stomach the $85 price tag. No one really needs 10 different shades of gray nail polish, especially at that price, but apparently there were more than enough polish fiends out there with deep pockets — the set is currently sold out at Lucky Scent, the set's exclusive retailer.

Would you drop that much dough on nearly-identical nail polishes, or do you think this is depressingly whack?

Watch Now: Did Prada Open Up A Gas Station? Prada spring '12, a collection that hits the accelerator hard, rocketing us back to retro-flavored style. Now, with the release of their latest campaign video, we're finding new inspiration to don the rockabilly meets Grease Lightning gear. Underscored by a fresh mixtape from Duck and Cover, Tom Recchion, and Tobacco, watch the Prada collection in motion, as featured on the best dressed women we have ever spotted in a gas station — although, granted, they never pick up a nozzle.

Anything goes at this petrol stop: super femme pleated dresses, the coolest floral bodysuits, tons of opulent bling, those now-infamous hot rod Prada pumps with flames intact, and maybe a few snarky sideways glances from the ladies who lunch drive. Take a minute to watch the flick, as filmed by Steven Meisel, and welcome infinite '50s cool back to the 21st century. Now, any guesses on what Prada's next perfume will smell like?

This Is Our Jam: oOoOO [Feat. ButterClock], "NoWayBack"

oOoOO (pronounced “oh”) is the nom de guerre of San Francisco producer Christopher Dexter Greenspan, whose haunting music sounds pretty much like you’d think it would when reading his band name on paper. “NoWayBack” has oOoOO picking up where he left off with 2010's self-titled EP, this time in tandem with angelically voiced Berlin artist ButterClock (she co-wrote and sings on the track). The resulting first taste of the forthcoming Our Loving Is Hurting Us is a mix of Italo synths and spare drum kicks intertwined with ButterClock’s hazy vocals. It's spoOoOOky stuff, and beautiful too.

Watch: Alexis Bittar's ABsolutely FABulous New Campaign Alexis Bittar's certainly struck a high note (and hit a funny bone) by including the ever-fabulous Edina and Patsy, front women of the British sitcom hit, Absolutely Fabulous, in his latest campaign. The slapstick duo get decked out, sip champas, pose, pose pose (let's hope there's some La Croix in there, sweetie), and mingle with other industry fancies — it's basically their ultimate dream come true besides easy going sex with gorgeous, underage youths... And as a die-hard fan of the Brit babes, it's Bittar's wish granted, too. Check out the sneak-peek video below—we can all agree that at least the jewels are no joke. Oh, and obviously no Saffron in sight.

Scary Hair Accessories: Even The Model Looks Scared Of These Things Remember these things? Plastic balls attached to hair elastics that make you look like an unbalanced version of Minnie Mouse? They're back! We spotted this set on the ASOS site, and if you'll notice, not even the model is convinced. Maybe she thought her pony tail was just fine before someone attached two Christmas ornaments to it? Who knows. What's important here is whether or not you agree with us? Spill your thoughts on this major blast from the past. Should it stay hidden in the confines of the late '80s and early '90s where it belongs, or is it time for a second spin in the limelight?

Does This Start-Up Stack Up? Curvio, IMDb For On-Screen Style Well, wouldn't that be handy? Yes, it seems that someone is claiming to have launched what many have dreamed of and at least a few have attempted – a searchable online database of the clothing used in television shows and movies.

Started just last month, Curvio is trying to be that mythical web site you've always wanted where you could check in right after (or during) the latest Michelle Williams movie or episode of Gossip Girl, and find out where the hell the costume department got that redic sequined dress Blair Waldorf was wearing when she slapped Chuck Bass at Sleep No More (you know the one).

But, alas, Curvio ain't there yet. With only four shows to its name and no links to help you snap up screen-approved styles, it's got a ways to go. But hang in there, little start-up, there are a lot of tube-watching people out there rooting for a site just like you (ourselves included). (Curvio)

Photo: Giovanni Rufino/The CW Are you excited about using Curvio? Yes! I'm always trying to figure out what so-and-so was wearing. I'll use it in a pinch, but I'm never really that interested in on-screen style. Nope–I have other methods... muahaha Dumb idea. Pass. Created on Feb 2, 2012

Our Fave Facebook Billionaire: This "Homeless" San Jose Graffiti Artist
Of all the billion-dollar Facebook payday stories clogging the web right now (and filling our hearts with seething jealousy), we think we like that of "homeless" San Jose graffiti artist David Choe the best.

Okay, first things first. He's not going to become a billionaire, rather a $200 millionaire, according to the Daily Mail UK, after he opted for stock options over a few thousand dollars when asked to put murals all over Facebook's HQ back in 2005.

And while art-school dropout Choe describes himself as "homeless" on his website (he justifies it by explaining that he hardly ever stays put), we're thinking he now has the cash to build a mansion...or ten...and make himself quite comfy.

Or maybe Choe can just continue padding around the earth. On the "About" page on his site, he says his goal is to "retire early, illustrate the entire bible, and paint the entire Wall of China." Yep, you can probably do all of that now.

Choe told the NY Times that he thought Facebook was "ridiculous and pointless" when he drew that first mural (his paintings can now be found all over FB's offices), but like a true start-up savvy Bay Area resident, he also understood the possibly huge value of stock options.

Although this richer-than-God artist isn't offering many quotes to the press after Facebook filed the paperwork for its historic $5 billion IPO yesterday, you can get to know him in the little video clip above...and also watch The Zuck awkwardly spray paint a stick figure. Classic.

The Trippiest Lipstick Ad We've Ever Seen — And It Works
More of a music video than a commercial, it was created to introduce the brand's new Rouge In Love lipsticks. Directed by Adria Petty (one of the masterminds behind Beyoncé's "Countdown" video) and featuring a song by French pop duo Brigitte, the video is like a surrealist take on a typical cosmetics ad — disembodied lips sing along to the words of the song and apply the new lipsticks to their floating pouts while the Eiffel Tower and Times Square loom in the background. Lancôme spokesmodel Emma Watson even makes a few appearances, on bus ads and Jumbotrons.

It's definitely a bit strange, but it's also highly entertaining, so kudos to the brand for trying something different. Also, those lipsticks look amazing and we want every single shade, so looks like this little experiment was a success, at least in our case.

Hottie Throwback! Do You Recognize This Legally Troubled Lovely?

Martha Stewart.... is that YOU!? While we most regularly associate Ms. Stewart with hot cider and acorn bouquets instead of, uh, hot photos, and come-hither stares, it's really not that shocking that she was a model beauty back in the day. Despite her recent fisticuffs with the law, Martha's been aging as gracefully as possible. We're somewhat glad she's thrown in the towel on the swimsuit pics, but dang, she really had the chops for posing. It's a good thing. (The Gloss)

Throw A Super Bowl Soirée In No Time, On A Dime People are going to get hungry, thirsty, and loud—and not necessarily in that order. The best way to stay ahead of the game? Serve simple, pre-made dishes that don't break the bank, have someone else bring a dessert or side, and make sure to tell 'em all it's BYOB.

For your part, you can't go wrong with chili and rice. There's a reason why that's such a go-to for events like these: no service! Just provide the ladle and some garnishes, and guests can dish it out themselves. The First Crowd-Sourced Novel Is (Naturally) Born Right Here In S.F.
While crowd sourcing is a hot concept in almost all businesses at the moment, one realm it hasn't touched is the mystical world of novel writing...until now, that is.

Leave it to a San Francisco-based author to come up with an uber-tech-savvy way to write a first novel. Her name is Natalie Linden, she calls herself the Unreliable Novelist, and her project is something she dubs a "feminist fairytale spy novel."

After struggling to complete her novel all by her lonesome, the Mission-based copywriter-by-day decided to get the public involved by setting up a website — see it for yourself, here — that lets readers peek in and actually contribute their ideas to her in-progress novel.

"I tried to write my novel the traditional way: at home, alone in my PJs, overdosing on carbs, and discussing plot points with my cat," Linden tells us. "It really wasn't working for me. After a couple of years at it, I finally decided if I was ever going to get this thing done, I needed some help. My day job is copywriting for branding agencies, so I know first-hand that collaboration can really spur creativity. I also know the value of feedback. If Kickstarter could rally all that cash for art, I figured I could rally at least a couple hundred opinions to help me write 400 pages."

Now about a quarter through the writing process, Linden has secured help from folks across the interwebs to figure out conundrums like whether her character should have sex on a second date, what the very first sentence to her book should be, and what sort of vintage-cool car her protagonist should be driving (this is a spy novel, after all!).

For their contributions, Linden gives her helpers a shout-out in her video blogs, on the acknowledgements tab on her site (and hopefully on the dedication page of her actual in-the-flesh novel!), and a donation is made on their behalf to the locally loved 826 Valencia literacy program.

Sound like something you'd like to contribute to instead of, ya' know, taking the time to write your own work of fiction? Head over here and see how it all goes down.

Yes, Please. Dreamy Mix & Match Bikinis For Your Next Island Getaway street-style starlet Gabby Sabharwal — dreamed up Giejo, a pint-sized collection that's already heavy in print-cred.

The idea was to offer six mix-and-match separates inspired by her favorite vintage fabrics and silhouettes. After scouring the garment district for swatches and samples, Sabharwal chose both the classic and unexpected. The nautically-oriented will love the bandeau top in cream and navy, and underwire number in the sweetest periwinkle floral is straight-up gorgeous. For those who dare to go bold, the zoomed-in ikat triangle in noir and the retro bottoms are must-haves. And if you're somewhere in the middle like us, there are plenty of patchworked styles to indulge your indecision!

Check Barneys for the Giejo collection soon, or shop online here!

But even more importantly, what are you going to wear? Wondering which understated, elegant (but still seksi) dress will be right for the occasion? How about chucking all that fine, fine skirting back into the closet and going cute casual with a pair of boyfriend jeans, your favorite rock tee, beat-up kicks, and this completely insane, perfectly pink BLK DNM motorcycle jacket? This well-cut version of the classic perfecto jacket takes the iconic item's dark, rugged history and turns it on its head. Just one caveat. Seeing as it's made by Johan Lindeberg's crew of rock-design experts, this lil' baby comes in at $2,490! Sure, that's a pretty penny, but it's an exclusive from The Webster and, truly, no piece of V-Day apparel could ever compare. It might be a great splurge to put on your (or the SO's) credit card...in this case, you'll get what you pay for.

Your new jacket goes well with just about everything. You could even pair it with that lovely dress you had picked out, but we guarantee the boy will love this even better when paired with one of his shirts.

BLK DNM Exclusive Leather Jacket, $2,490, available at The Webster, 1220 Collins Avenue (between 12th and 13th streets); 305-673-5548.

Daily Diversion: Has Anyone Said This Shit? shit Has anyone said this shit? Legions of tail-end trend followers are asking themselves this question right now as they prep their own "Shit _____s Say" videos. Due to the massive proliferation of similar clips that followed the genre-defining "Shit Girls Say Part 1", it can be hard for aspiring shit sayers to find out if there already exists a "Shit Dog Trainers Say" or a "Shit Malawians Say" in the rapidly growing marketplace of people saying shit. In response the worldwide interest in the kind of shit different types of people say comes the timely and brilliant Has Anyone Said This Shit?, a simple search engine where you can type "golf instructors", "dulas", or pretty much anything you want between "Shit" and "Say" and find out once and for all if anyone has already said that shit. Save The Planet (& Your Wallet) With These New Shampoos We're very big on the waste not, want not adage around here — we think beauty products should be good until the very last drop. Problem is, sometimes it's really hard to get that last smidgen of product out of its container — we've tried everything from scooping it out with our pinkie finger to violently thwacking the bottle against our hands in a desperate effort to get at what's left of our fave cream or conditioner.

That's why we're so appreciative of Pureology's new Zero Waste packaging: It's specifically designed to expunge every last ounce of shampoo and conditioner out of the bottle. You can get more than 70 shampoos from just one tube! As an added bonus, all of the packaging is 100% recyclable, and the ingredients are entirely vegan and organic. Save the Earth with a shower? It might just be possible...

This Is Our Jam: Mirel Wagner, "No Death"

Singer/songwriter Mirel Wagner comes to us from Finland by way of Ethiopia, an unusual trajectory for any artist, not to mention one whose forlorn folk evokes artists like Will Oldham and Nancy Sinatra. With “No Death,” Wagner employs only spare guitar and breathy vocals as she strums a lament that is equal parts defiant and tragic. When Wagner sings “No death can tear us apart,” the implication, of course, is that the loss is inevitable. It's as haunting a sentiment as it is a melody, and lingers long after the last notes have faded.

Snooki's Rumored Pregnancy Means No Blacking Out For 9 Months Snooki might have a bun sky-high poof in the oven. She's reportedly been buzzing to "insiders," who have in turn been buzzing to Star magazine (so let's take that with a grain of salt) about the baby-to-be. The father is supposedly none other than Jioni LaValle, Snooks on-again, off-again boyfriend who gets mad at the tiny reality star when she dances on tables and lifts up her skirt. We're assuming her bad-girl behavior would stop if the rumored future mommy actually became a mommy, but we still pity Jioni as we think of having to put up with both a crying infant and Snooki's signature, "wahhhhhh." Can You Believe Gwyneth Is Anti-Botox? That's What's She's Telling Bazaar...

Pretty Gwynnie is so ravishing she basically jumps at you off the pages of the new March issue of Harper's Bazaar (set to hit stands Valentine's Day), but here's a Hollywood shocker: She doesn't do Botox! Yes, she'll admit to the occasional detox, and intense daily dance and aerobic workouts with trainer Tracy Anderson, but there are no fillers in sight for this Academy Award winner. And Bazaar's heartfelt interview makes it pretty clear that her beauty really does radiate from within.

Touching on topics from the loss of her dad to throat cancer eight years ago (the cause of her dedication to clean living) and open-mindedness to infidelity (just read the article) to goop and her upcoming second cookbook, the interview is chock-full of quotables. But our favorite sound bite was about archiving her wardrobe for Apple (don't we all have our daughters in mind when we hoard?): "I've been saving my clothes for her since before she was born. I was like, I'll bet you anything I'll have a daughter, and she'll be a really cool butch lesbian and be so above clothes, and I got a very clothes-obsessed child. So if she's a lesbian, she's a lipstick lesbian." Hah!

Watch: Die Antwoord Freak Out For Alex Wang's Newest Campaign Die Antwoord is a rad South African rap 'n' rage 'n' rave trio that makes no apologies for their gritty style and in-your-face lyrics. And, given their raw, aggressive style, it's somewhat surprising that they'd play poster children for T by Alexander Wang's new video campaign, below. Don't get us wrong, they're totally awesome. But they're just not screaming "chic simplicity" as loudly as Mr. Wang's clothes do. Instead, they scream things like "yipee kay-yay motha-f*cka." Either way, we like it, and we're thinking this might be a little preview of songs to look for on the runway. For reference, it's called "Fatty Boom Boom."

Refinery29 Handicaps The Super Bowl… Commercials While some people in our offices know enough about football to offer more than an educated guess as to who will win Sunday’s Super Bowl XLVI (ahem), the majority of us know much more about talking animals and celeb cameos than we do about defensive sets and red-zone completion stats. So, instead of telling you if the New York Giants will top the New England Patriots in Indianapolis this weekend, we’re placing bets on winning commercials.

Naturally, we're picking from already released ads, so keep your eyes peeled for game-day surprises.

Street Style: Tie It Together With A Scarf And Smile

Who she is: Genevieve
Where we spotted her: Monroe Street, Downtown.
Why we love her: This SAIC student makes takin' it easy look like so much more work than it really is. Skipping the basic black leggings and opting for a fresh set of tie-dye stems, Genevieve pulls together a laid-back ensemble with the help of sturdy boots and a slightly flared peacoat. Tie it up with a pretty pink bow...er...scarf on top, and this girl's ready to take on the day looking effortlessly sweet.

Snag Emma Stone's Fierce Smoky Eye With This Video Tutorial Emma Stone’s sultry makeup from the Golden Globes, and, since we're now masters of the Two-Step Smoky Eye, we thought this was definitely something we might be able to accomplish.

We learned that the secret ingredient to Emma's hazy-gazed hotness (besides having Andrew Garfield on her arm, obvs) is cream eyeshadow. Lady Gaga Saves The World, One Downward Dog At A Time Lady Gaga enriches our lives by giving us something to bop along to at our desks, and as an advocate she adds her amplified voice to that of the gay community. But we're scratching our heads a bit, when it comes to figuring out how she helps the general public by practicing yoga.

According to her Bikram instructor, "Lady Gaga is something very special, because she is a woman of service. She uses her talent to make this world better, and that’s because she practices yoga." Sooo... are we meant to believe that save for a little focused breathing, Lady Gaga's empire would crumble? And on another note, what the hridaya akasha does Lady Gaga wear to the yoga studio? How Red Carpet Fashion Works In China: It's Anyone's Guess china Instead of the cash-draining couture circus that is the Western-style red carpet, the Chinese build up buzz around what celebrities wear in an entirely different way. While we're used to every minor detail about clothing, accessories, hair, and makeup being broadcast and dissected before, during, and after the ceremonies, Chinese red carpet culture never reveals the designers.

They leave scrupulous bloggers and Internet commenters to try and battle it out to figure out what each person wore, and how they looked. If the general consensus is positive, a press release might go out naming the brands of the dress, jewelry, or accessories. If not, both celebrity and brand get shamed out of the limelight. When we meandered through the giant gallery space of LACMA's latest visual feat, In Wonderland: The Surrealist Adventures of Women Artists in Mexico and the United States last week, we were in utter and complete awe (no joke, tears were dripping into our champagne). Never before have we felt so proud to be female!

This ultra-empowering exhibit features the works of Frida Kahlo, Dorothea Tanning, Helen Lundeberg, and our favorite, Gertrude Abercrombie. Not only will the dreamlike, avant-garde art send your eyes and minds into overdrive, the backstory will leave you wowed for days at just how far we've come as women.

If you didn't know, the Surrealist movement is largely thought of as a male and European-based aesthetic, and we ladies took a backseat as mere muses on that side of the pond. Here in North America, where freedom of ideas reigned supreme (sometimes), women were able to transcend that role, and get behind the canvas to become true creators. Those struggles were oftentimes depicted in a nightmarish scape, as seen by Gertrude Abercrombie's The Courtship, above. Although at first glance it may not be obvious, the artist apparently had a great sense of humor, and had her tongue firmly planted in cheek when she illustrated her frustrations with the then-patriarchal society via a mock hold-up (God, this is good stuff!).

Don't worry, though, there are plenty of bright and sunny pieces, too — by the time you finish peeping this intense display, you'll feel like you artistically understand the wondrous roller coaster of life. And because you can't behold a show of this beauteous caliber without rocking an achingly cool look yourself, we've rounded up an ensemble below that we're sure fashion-forward Frida would approve of!

When: Now through May 6; Monday, Tuesday, Thursday: 12 p.m. to 8 pm; Friday: 12 p.m. to 9 pm; Saturday, Sunday: 11 a.m. to 8 pm; closed Wednesday.
Where: LACMA, 5905 Wilshire Boulevard (At Fairfax Avenue); 323-857-6000.

Tuesday Treat: Kristen Bell Goes Looney Tunes Over Sloth Encounter
We've got a sneak peek at today's Ellen show, and it's sure to give you a serious case of the giggles. First of all, we've always thought Veronica Mars Kristen Bell was one of the cutest, most charismatic chicks in Lala land, and this live interview seals the deal.

For the actress' recent 31st birthday, beau Dax Shepard surprised her with a visit from a sloth (apparently in-person interaction with one of these adorably fuzzy creatures is one of her wildest dreams?), which induces a full-on fetal-positioned emotional meltdown that's a MUST see. She's either a) one helluva thespian, b) one of the most dramatic people on the planet, or c) all of the above. Watch her home video, and see what we mean!

Absolutely Obsessed: Bananappeal's Gorgeous (Delish) Treats

If there's one thing we're absolute suckers for, it's amazing packaging. So, the moment we laid our eyes on the brand-new, born-in-San Francisco Bananappeal treats, we were smitten (gorgeous, no?). Then, of course, we devoured the snack itself, and now we're pretty much head over heels.

The brainchild of former San Franciscan Courtney Dougherty, who has recently decamped for Denver, Bananappeal is just what it describes itself as: "An incredible, delicious, all-natural, ready-to-eat, banana-based dessert, baked and sold in glass jars!"

The snacks come in either 4- or 8-ounce Mason jars and are split into two categories: frosted banana cakes or cheesecakes. The flavors are plentiful and delectable: Banana Salted Caramel, Banana Peanut Butter, Banana Gingersnap, Banana Tiramisu, and the list goes on. Then, of course, it's tucked into a country-cool Mason jar, slapped with some rad logos, and tied with a charming piece of candy-cane-striped twine.

"I knew that I wanted to differentiate myself and so I decided to focus on one ingredient. Always a banana-lover, I had felt that bananas never received the credit they deserved in the dessert arena beyond basic banana bread," explains Dougherty, who worked as a pastry chef in New York and Chicago and with Tyler Florence in San Francisco. "I wanted to show people that the banana desserts I made could stand up to other high-quality, fine-dining desserts." And that they definitely do.

So, how can you get your paws (and lips) on them? GiltTaste is hawking the sweet treats, just in time for Valentine's Day, later this week, and Williams-Sonoma will be doing the same starting March 15. Foodie jarheads, mark your calendars.

Daily Diversion: How To Make A Bread Hat For Your Cat cat_breading It looks like we're a little late to this adorable, carbo-loaded party, seeing as the Facebook page for putting a piece of bread on your cat already has almost 10,000 likes. But, for any of you who are just getting introduced to "Breading" like us, this article on Gawker outlines the process in four easy steps, and even points out that soft, white bread is best for beginners to use. Who knew?! No doubt that there will soon be among us those who argue that only a locally-levened loaf is the acceptable adornment for your feline, but for now, we'll enjoy this yeasty delight before PETA comes and ruins it. ]]> http://www.refinery29.com/daily-diversion-breading-cats?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss entry_26786 Tue, 31 Jan 2012 17:40:00 -0500 Part 1 Of R29's Mystery Adventure: A Barcelona Photo Diary NEXTPEDITION from American Express Travel. True to form, the trip has been a complete surprise so far (we found out about our first destination — Barcelona! — just two days before we left). After scrambling to pack for the trip (as well stuffing a few miscellaneous pieces for our still-unknown second destination), we hopped onto a jet, threw back a few Bloody Marys, and found ourselves in Spain before sunrise. The following photo diary of the trip so far (featuring our beloved global editor, Connie Wang) and our recommendations about where to eat, where to shop, and what to expect if you're gearing up for a NEXTPEDITION trip from American Express as well. Brazilians Bikinis Are Getting Bigger

When we think Brazil, we visualize beaches of beautiful Gisele-Alessandra-and-Adriana-like-looking girls dancing to samba and bossa nova in barely there bikinis (or the pool scene in South Beach). After all, this is the country that is known for its affection for floss. But we might need to tweak our thinking. It seems an unexpected side effect of Brazilians' rising wealth is an increase in their bathing suit sizes. Swimsuits are getting bigger. No, they're not developing some sort of newfound modesty in Ipanema (or, again, South Beach). Instead, it's the country's expanding waistlines that are leading to additional sizes. Ever the fabulous, free spirits, brasileiros are embracing their fuller figures with open arms. And, naturally, entrepreneurs are making bank by carrying a broader array of sizes without sacrificing the South American nation's signature sexiness. Look for plunging necklines, string ties, and barely there bottoms to continue being a staple of the Brazilian bikini. Is this a case of bigger is better? We're all for embracing your size, but, uh, weigh in below. (Sydney Morning Herald)

Exclusive: Mena Suvari Flirts With Us In Christian Siriano's Video Lookbook Christian Siriano ever sent down the runway been demure? Well, a quick look at his new video lookbook (boyfriend Brad Walsh produced it and provided the tunage!) for spring 2012 shows that, while the young designer is still whipping up his share of frilly, red-carpet showpieces, he's also managed to work sophisticated, understated wearables into his new collection. His simple white jacket, gauzy chartreuse skirt, and striped, sleeveless top certainly belong in the R29 shopping list, and other, more ambitious pieces here – worn by the ever-beautiful, ever-eye-catching Mena Suvari at NYC's own Soho Grand – are more than worth a try. Siriano may still be "fierce", but it seems he's willing to relax a little too.

Simon Doonan Dishes On D.C. Style & So Much More Barneys' creative ambassador at-large (and all-around personal style wizard) Simon Doonan stops by the W Hotel tomorrow for a book party for his new tome, Gay Men Don't Get Fat. With an RSVP, you can swing by the free event, grab a book and an autograph, and swill specialty cocktails while gleaning pearls of wardrobe wisdom from the author. But it's an event (and likely, a packed one), so you won't have tons of time to ask Simon all your burning style Qs — which is why we did just that, for you. We got the dapper Brit to dish his thoughts on spring trends we have to try, dressing for a conservative workplace, and the celeb styles he's currently loving. Read on for some first-class advice from one of the most fabulous men in fashion.

What trends should women most look forward to for spring?
"You need to indulge in some digital prints by Erdem or any designer who is doing prints. They are gorgeous and life-enhancing."

What are your favorite colors for the season?
"[I] am having a blue period: cobalt, electric, sky blue, baby blue..."

For winter, is there any tip or trick we can use to look less frumpy but still be warm?
"Huge glamour shades by The Row can make for a less frowzy look when you are bundled up."

What's your least favorite current fashion phenomenon?
"I think the jumbo mega-platform may have peaked. [I] am loving the platform-less shoe."

Any starlet style you're really digging right now?
"Rooney Mara really has an edgy, groovy quality. She reminds me of the punk rock chicks I knew back in the '70s. God! I'm old!"

What can Washington women do to step up their work wardobes? How can you have fun with your style when the work culture is so conservative?
"I think it's better to accept and surrender to the conservative nature of your Washington work environment — and then let loose at the weekends with something more outrageous."

And what about the men — what would you like to see Washington men wearing these days?
"Men in Washington are all playing it safe, and rightly so. When politicians start dressing like rock stars and freaks, then you should start to worry."

We've heard your thoughts on political style — if you could have a day to do some personal shopping for any one candidate, who would it be, and what would you do?
"Dressing any politician would be a thankless task. They need to look boring in order to get elected. Dressing them would be no fun at all."

What's your most prized fashion possession?
"I love my Goyard bag with my initials emblazoned on the side. SD — sometimes people on the subway ask me if I am from South Dakota."

Any secret talents we should know about? If you weren't a fashion guru, what would you do in a dream career?
"I would love to be a pro soccer player. Just call me Sporty Spice."

When: Wednesday, February 1, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Where: W Washington D.C., Altitude Rooftop Ballroom, 515 15th Street NW; RSVP via email.

This Is Our Jam: M.I.A., "Bad Girls"

It seems almost superflous for “Bad Girls” to be released as the first single for M.I.A.’s untitled upcoming album — not because the song isn’t great, but because many of us have been listening to a slightly truncated version of the track for over year on her excellent Vicki Leekx mixtape.

For those that missed out the first time around, “Bad Girls” sees M.I.A. returning to form, forgoing the grating noise and overall unpleasantness that defined her last album, /\/\/\Y/\. With what will surely be a relief for some fans, “Bad Girls” disregards any notions of the political in favor of a catchy, somewhat meaningless refrain: “Live fast, die young / Bad girls do it well” sings Maya. Sure, why not. The true success of “Bad Girls” can be credited largely to production from Timbaland protegé Danja, whose cocktail of slinky pop owes a thing or two to Diplo’s past success with M.I.A.. Ultimately, it’s a single strong enough to warrant the re-release, and there’s something to be said for not having to fast forward to 14:55 to hear the track. Let’s hope M.I.A.’s new album lives up. Genius Packing Advice From The Smartest Traveler We Know: Our Own EIC I don't care what anyone says, packing properly is harder than actually planning and booking a vacation. Anyone can throw everything they own into a rolly bag, but it takes real skill to thoughtfully plan just the right mix of essentials to bring along for the ideal travel wardrobe.

Given I am on a plane several times a month, I have made packing my absolute obsession. And after a lot of trial and error (and way too many dresses that have gone unworn!), here's what I've learned:

1. Weather check. Yes, it's more fun to wing it, but so NOT fun when you're preparing for a dinner on a gorgeous 75-degree evening and all you have is a heavy wool dress. Boo! Take the time to check the weather and make sure that everything you do bring is climate appropriate.

2. Edit, edit, edit! Lay everything you really want to bring out on your bed, and then, piece by piece, take away half of what's there, leaving you with only the pieces you truly love wearing that you will feel good in. Traveling is never a time to "road-test" something you haven't worn before. If you haven't worn it on your home turf, you sure won't wear it somewhere else.

3. Extra accessories equal extra options. I absolutely never check luggage (such a time drain!), and I make sure the clothes-to-accessories ratio in my bag is always 1:2. Choose a few key pieces that create a bunch of flexible outfits, and then double the number of accessories you bring. One pair of flats, one pair of evening heels, a chic clutch, oversized earrings, matching cuffs, a statement necklace (or two!), and a few cocktail rings can make even your most basic outfit feel special and unique. And they take up the least amount of room in your bag.

4. The bag matters. That old overnight bag you inherited from your mom or your last boyfriend? Toss it. Immediately! Never, ever, ever think your travel bag doesn't matter. It may be "luggage" but it actually defines your travel look, and when it's great-looking and functional, it actually makes it more fun to travel with and pack.

Speaking of bags that matter, want to score the ultimate city-girl-friendly suitcase? The gorg and lightweight Lipault foldable carry-on above is now available on Reserve in four R29-approved colors.
