6 In-Your-Face Lipsticks That Look Cool On Everyone

If Dr. Seuss were still around today, we bet he'd have a field day with the lips of 2016. There are plump lips, small lips, Insta lips, nude lips, metallic lips, ombré lips, and blue lips — and we love them all. So, to model the best new fall shades, we tapped three women with gorgeous lips of their own, got up close and personal, and let their pouts do the talking.

There's a red that makes your teeth look bright-white. A pink that can replace your favorite nude. A gold that's shockingly easy to pull off. A purple that will make you feel like the baddest girl around. As for the others? Well, you can see for yourself.

Ahead, six shades, tips on how to wear them, and, of course, where to buy them — because if there was ever a time to put your money where your mouth is, it's now.

Highlight your smile with a brick-red shade that has purple-blue undertones. (It naturally makes teeth appear whiter — can't you tell?)

We love the sheer effect on our model Aeisha, but if you want to even out the tone of your lips first, dab a bit of foundation on them as the base. "I usually concentrate it more on the edges so that when I apply my color, it looks even more defined," says our makeup artist Ashley Diabo.

By now, you should know that we don't follow seasonal makeup rules. (Or any rules, for that matter.) Anyone who tells you that bright-pink — or red, or orange — is best saved for the sunny months is seriously missing out. There's no quicker way to cheer up your day, and your moody smoky eye, than with a shot of Barbie-box pink.

If you want to ease into metallic lipstick from the shallow end (rather than cannonballing in), try bronze first. It seems bold in the tube, but once you sweep it on, it's just a jazzier version of a taupe or a cool, '90s-era brown.

Can fair tones pull it off? We'll let our model Thali answer that.

In the colder months, true nudes can wash you out. This sheer dusty rose, on the other hand, turns up your natural lip tone just a notch. On pale skin, it skews a bit more sweet and princess-y pink; on dark skin, it lends a just-bitten, berry hue. But all you need to know is it's really, really pretty on everyone.

When burgundy is too predictable and black is too much, reach for this deep, bruised plum, as seen on Michele. It plays nicely on most skin tones, but that doesn't mean it's effortless.

You're going to need a lipliner, a lip brush, and — most importantly — patience. Fill in your lips completely with liner "to keep the lipstick from feathering and act as a base," advises Diabo. Then go in with a surgeon's hand to finish the rest.

Dior Rouge Dior Couture Colour in Poison Matte, $35, available at Dior.

You might not believe us, but this glossy, brown lipstick also flatters everyone. Diabo says: "On lighter skin tones, it looks more intense and vampy, and on deeper skin tones, it looks like a beautiful nude."

Because the formula is so slick and prone to transferring, you might want to cheat a bit. Layer it over a matte, brown lipstick and avoid the lip lines, focusing the shine under the Cupid's bow and in the center of the bottom lip as a highlight.

NARS Velvet Lip Glide in Area, $26, available at Sephora.
