A Timeline Of Lauren & Arie's Electric Relationship

Last night, Lauren Burnham and Arie Luyendyk, Jr. got engaged after a tumultuous season of The Bachelor. Luyendyk and Burnham have an "inexplicable" connection, one that was so elusive Luyendyk had to get engaged to another woman before he understood it. Their relationship is — speaking diplomatically — reserved. Reticent. Reluctant. Just kidding, they actually do care about each other a lot, based on what they say, but their timeline is hella confusing. When did they meet? And when did they break up? Later, when did Luyendyk contact Burnham again? And, most importantly, what does Burnham think of Luyendyk's Les Miserables tattoo?

There's a lot about Burnham and Luyendyk that we'll never understand, like the fact that they can supposedly read each other's minds. But maybe by examining the clues surrounding their relationship, we can get a sense of their narrative. They love their "story" after all, even though it's riddled with betrayal. Ahead, the Lauren-Arie story, as best we can understand it.

Summer 2017: Lauren meets Arie

Something strange happened during the finale Monday night: Burnham admitted that she met Luyendyk "in the summer." A source told Us Weekly that the two met at a race in Dallas. Burnham and Luyendyk took a photo together. According to Jacqueline Trumbull, who appeared on the Huffington Post podcast Here to Make Friends, Burnham presented the photo taken at the event to Luyendyk during her Bachelor entrance. We missed this because Burnham's entrance wasn't heavily featured in the show's premiere — perhaps because the show's editors didn't know just yet that Burnham would be the winner.

November 2017: Luyendyk sends Burnham home

After some deliberation, Luyendyk chooses Becca Kufrin over Burnham, much to Burnham's (very placid) dismay.
Mid-December 2017: Luyendyk likes a photograph on Burnham's Instagram

Everyone, including Kufrin, is suspicious. Luyendyk doesn't follow Burnham on Instagram, so he must have been surfing her page. Moreover, it's an old photo. Burnham posted it in November of 2016. Luyendyk, what's up?
Mid-December 2017: Luyendyk DMs Burnham

Production couldn't give Luyendyk Burnham's number, so he went through Instagram. Presumably, this occurred shortly after the erroneous like.
December 31, 2017: Luyendyk calls Burnham

Burnham, according to Tia Booth, is in Dallas with Adam Gottschalk, Raven Gates, and Booth. They are all aware that Luyendyk contacted Burnham, but thus far Kufrin is not. Caroline Lunny explained on The Almost Famous Podcast with Ben and Ashley I. that, after hearing about the phone call, she reached out to Kufrin to ask if everything was okay. Kufrin was confused. (The accompanying photo is of Gates' New Year's Eve gathering, which took place in Dallas. Burnham and Booth are not pictured because they do not yet matter.)

January 11, 2018: Luyendyk ends his engagement to Kufrin

We all saw this play out on live television! It was uncomfortable, but it was realistic. On The Ringer's Bachelor Party podcast, Robert Mills confirmed that the breakup occurred on January 11 of this year.
Mid-January 2018, shortly after: Luyendyk makes his way to Virginia

There, he reconciles with Burnham.
March 6, 2018: Luyendyk and Burnham get engaged

"I've made some bad decisions, but the best decision was running back to you," Luyendyk informs her, getting down on one knee. When he pops the question, she says, "Definitely."
