22 Celebrities Share Their Freaky Ghost Stories

Not everyone believes in ghosts. But, sometimes a nonbeliever just needs to hear a convincing story from the right person. Maybe if, say, a celebrity the naysayer loves and adores shared her encounter with the supernatural, the spook doubter might become more open to the idea of ghoulish friends. As it turns out, plenty of celebs have experienced something kinda freaky. Actually, Lucy Liu claims to have gotten freaky with a ghost.

The stories run from the typical — Cynthia Rowley lived in a scary old Connecticut mansion — to the cinematic – John Waters had a brush with a phantasmagorical orb while at summer camp. Honestly, you won't even need to watch a scary movie ever again after hearing Waters' frankly poetic account of his encounter with the Great Beyond. That said, no one tells a ghost story like Carrie Fisher.

Ahead, 22 accounts of famous people and the lucky ghosts who haunt them.

Lucy Liu

Lucy Liu got close to a ghost once. Very close. As in, she claims to have had sex with a ghost.

In an interview with Us Weekly, Liu said, “I was sleeping on my futon and some sort of spirit came down from God knows where and made love to me. It was sheer bliss. I felt everything. I climaxed. And then he floated away. Something came down and touched me, and now it watches over me.”

We’ll leave this up to your interpretation.
Jenna Bush Hager

To no one’s surprise, the White House is haunted — or at least so says President George W. Bush’s daughter, Jenna.

"I heard a ghost. I was asleep, there was a fireplace in my room and all of a sudden I heard 1920s music coming out. I could feel it, I freaked out and ran into my sister's room. She was like, 'Please go back to sleep, this is ridiculous,’” she said on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno in 2009.

Then, her sister became convinced. "The next week we were both asleep in my room, the phone had rang and woke us up. We were talking and going back to bed, when all of a sudden we heard this opera coming out of the fireplace. We couldn't believe it, we both jumped in bed and were asking the people that worked there the next morning, 'Are we crazy?'”

People who lived in the White House said they heard noises all the time. Even Hilary Clinton said “it can be a little creepy” to live in the White House.
Cynthia Rowley

In an episode of Celebrity Ghost Stories, the fashion designer recounted a true story straight out of a scary movie. She’d often see an apparition of a woman wearing a scarf over her face in her creaky Greenwich, Connecticut, house. Then, her house caught fire.

The Greenwich fire chief told Rowley that the woman who used to live in the mansion was the Diamond March heiress who had been badly disfigured in a fire in her father's match factory. Coincidence?
Joan Juliet Buck

When Joan Juliet Buck became the first (and last) American editor of French Vogue, she moved into a beautiful apartment on Rue Jacob fit for a big-shot editor. In a Moth story, she recounts how she became convinced there was a ghost sharing the apartment with her. One day, she brought her friends to her bedroom. There, on the bed, was the indentation of a body. That was in June.

In October, Buck was awoken by the sound of extreme violence, so loud that her room moves. When she ran downstairs to see the source of the noise coming from the apartment upstairs, she saw no movement in the room above her. Then, she visited her upstairs neighbors. They told her they never go into the bedroom — it was haunted.

Eventually, she moved out. The person who moved out after her also confirmed the house was haunted.
Montgomery Clift

Sometimes, celebrities are the ones who do the haunting. In a vivid story told in a Moth storytelling slam, screenwriter Craig Chester describes how various encounters with psychics led him to believe that the ghost of Montgomery Clift was urging him to write his biopic.

“None of what you’re talking about is important. There’s a spirit of a dead gay actor around you, and your next movie is going to be about this man,” Katherine, a psychic, told him in New York. “He’s been waiting a long time for this reunion.”

He brushes it off, until he meets another psychic in L.A. at a party. When Montgomery Clift is mentioned at the party, Josanne tells him, “This Montgomery Clift guy is attached to your hip. You’re going to write a screenplay for him.” She proceeds to say, word-for-word, what Katherine had said in New York.
John Waters

The man behind Cry-Baby and Hairspray has a story of when he came face-to-face with a ghost during summer camp in the late ‘50s, which he told on an episode of Celebrity Ghost Stories. It happened one night at Happy Hollow Summer Camp. Waters was ten years old. One evening, ten-year-old Waters went on a camping trip deep into the woods

That night, all the campers woke up and began calling out for their counselors. No one responded. It seemed that the counselors had disappeared. While searching for the counselors, Waters saw a zooming white light in the forest. “This was something I’ve never seen before, ever in my life,” he said. ”It was a face. And it was the face of an older man. And it has an odor of powdered sugar. It looked at me. It was familiar. It looked at me understandingly.” Waters stared at it in wonderment and excitement. Apparently, he felt calm watching it. Then the teeth on the face popped out. Waters had an interesting response to that terrifying moment.

“I knew I would never be frightened of anything again,” Waters said.
Carrie Fisher

Our dear departed Carrie Fisher went on Celebrity Ghost Stories to describe the uncanny events that occurred when her good friend, Republican strategist R. Gregory Stevens, visited her in her Los Angeles home. Stevens stayed in her bed overnight; tragically, when Fisher awoke, she saw that he’d died overnight at the age of 42.

In the time after the tragedy, she felt Stevens’ presence linger in her house. She would often greet his ghost .“It was like [the house] was heavier...you’d walk in the air and there was something liquid, almost,” she said in the show. Then, the noises followed.

“Lights would go on and off, and this [talking] toy machine [I had] would go off in the night, by itself, in my closet,” Fisher told Vanity Fair. "I was a nut for a year, and in that year I took drugs again."

Cher thinks her ex-husband, Sonny Bono, is haunting her house, and she doesn't mind at all.

During a Reddit Ask Me Anything, Cher said, "I love ghosts. I actually think that Sonny makes a light go on. I have a beautiful chandelier that he makes the light go on when it is impossible, there is no power on. I love ghosts, I prefer ghosts to some people."
Joan Rivers

While renovating her new apartment in 1987, Rivers made the unpleasant discovery that her apartment was haunted by a ghost — a ghost with a raunchy sense of humor. She found R-rated scribbles on her wall, and her dog wouldn’t go into the apartment. The building super said, “Oh, I guess Mrs. Spencer is back."

Mrs. Spencer used to be a resident in the building.
Kate Hudson & Goldie Hawn

Apparently, in addition to both having careers in Hollywood, this mother-daughter duo share a psychic sixth sense.

“Me and my mom Goldie can see dead people,” Kate Hudson bluntly told Alan Carr in 2014. She clarified the extent of her abilities when she said, “'It is not really seeing, it is feeling a spirit. A fifth energy. I believe in energy. I believe our brains can manifest into visual things.”

In the DVD extras of Skeleton Key, Hudson specified her paranormal encounters.

“I’ve seen a ghost of a woman with no face, and that was really creepy. Another time. my grandmother came to me and I woke up and felt amazing that she was around me.”

Miley Cyrus
During a trip to London, Cyrus stayed at an apartment that used to be an old bakery. “I was having really crazy dreams and really scary things,” she told Elle U.K. One night, her little sister started screaming while in the shower. “I run in there, and the water had somehow flipped to hot...it wasn’t like the water had just changed. The knob had turned, but she hadn’t turned it, and it was burning her. She was really red.” Miley also claims to have seen a small boy “sitting on the sink watching me take a shower.”

Lady Gaga
In 2010, Gaga’s crew said she was freaked out because a ghost named Ryan was following her.

“She’s pretty terrified by this spirit, but more than anything he’s annoying her as he won’t leave her alone,” they told reporters. Gaga held a seance in Belfast to try and get rid of him. She reportedly dropped $47,000 on ghost-finding equipment. No word on whether Ryan was successfully busted.

When she was 17, Alba says she was attacked by a ghost. “I had no idea what it was,” she told the Sydney Herald. “I felt this pressure, and I couldn’t get up, I couldn’t scream.” Alba says something took the covers off her, and she couldn’t get out of bed.

Matthew McConaughey
When McConaughey first moved into his Hollywood home, he slept in a tent with his dog and a sleeping bag. One night, while naked, he heard “a sound like a dime dropping from 10 feet off the ground onto a glass table.” He grabbed a bat and ran “buck naked” to see what the noises were.

But, he realized, it must have been a ghost — one whom he’s since named Madame Blue. From what he says, she’s actually a pretty chill roommate. “She has no qualms with me. We get along just fine,” he told the Examiner. “She’s a cool ghost. Maybe me being nude all the time is why we get along.”

Kesha believes her vagina was at one time haunted. During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, she shared that her hypnotherapist had to exorcise ghosts from her vagina. If you want the full details, you can watch the clip here. Apparently, it’s a more common problem than you’d think.

Ariana Grande
While the singer was in Kansas City in October 2013, she wanted to go to Stull Cemetery, which, according to urban legend, is rumored to be a gateway to hell. “I felt this sick, overwhelming feeling of negativity over the whole car, and we smelled sulfur, which is the sign of a demon,” she told Complex. “There was a fly in the car randomly, which is another sign of a demon. I was like, ‘This is scary, let’s leave.’ I rolled down the window before we left and said, ‘We apologize. We didn’t mean to disrupt your peace,’” she told the magazine. She took a picture on her way out in which she claims she can see three “textbook demons.” When she tried to send the image to her manager, it wouldn’t send. It was 666 megabytes, and has since disappeared from her phone. She used to keep a folder of demon pictures on her phone — called “Demons” — but got rid of them when weird things started happening to her.

Keanu Reeves
When Reeves was a child living in New Jersey, he says he saw and felt a ghost. “I remember just staring at this suit, which had no body or legs in it, as it came into the room before disappearing,” he told ABC. “It was a doublebreasted suit in white, and I looked at my nanny, who was just as shocked as me.” Whoa.

Lovato told BuzzFeed that she’s haunted by a little girl ghost, who she believes is named Emily. “There were so many times that I saw her growing up. I saw her in my closet one time.” She apparently has footage of orbs flying in the air, and countless family members and friends to corroborate her story.

Sirs Patrick Stewart & Ian McKellen
While performing Waiting for Godot at the Theatre Royal Haymarket, the two claim to have seen the ghost of John Baldwin Buckstone, who was an actor and manager at the theater in the mid-19th century and a friend of Charles Dickens. “I think Buckstone appears when he appreciates things,” Stewart told The Telegraph. “We view it as a positive thing.”

Alyson Hannigan
Hannigan and her husband moved into a new home when she began filming How I Met Your Mother. During their first night there in 2003, a friend saw a ghost. “I don’t mean to alarm you, but I just saw a man follow us out of the house,” her friend told her. Hannigan thought this was quite polite. “At least he’s gentlemanly. He let us go first,” she responded. She’s considered putting a chalkboard and chalk next to where she believes he lives, in case he felt like writing her a note or his name.
