But, the two cities have an equally rich history of setting aside their differences to tackle important issues. Take, for example, when the Yankees and Red Sox came together to honor the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings. This year, we're seeing a similar alliance, as both Mayor Marty Walsh of Boston and Mayor Bill de Blasio of New York refused to march in their city's St. Patrick's Day parades because of the exclusion of LGBT groups. Now, Guinness has also removed its sponsorship from the NYC event.
Guinness and St. Patrick's Day kind of go hand-in-hand. But, the Irish beer brewer has spoken out against the parade's rules. In a written statement, a spokesman said, “Guinness has a strong history of supporting diversity and being an advocate for equality for all. We were hopeful that the policy of exclusion would be reversed for this year’s parade." The company also said it would continue to work with community leaders in the future to make sure the parades will be inclusive. Sam Adams and Heineken have also dropped their sponsorships this year.
