Every Amazing Thing That Happened To Selena Gomez In 2017

Selena Gomez is turning 25 on July 22 and her future has never looked brighter. For someone who's grown up with fans of all ages — from her early days on Barney, to her transition into Disney childhood fame, and her coming-of-age alongside Justin Bieber — she's managed to dip in and out of the harsh spotlight at times to focus on her personal health and work-life balance. But now, the scales are finally in her favor and everything feels... right. She's a whole new woman, as specifically be heard in her new experimental sound in "Bad Liar" and "Fetish," and been seen with refreshingly low maintenance public appearances.
But let me pause right there and put things into perspective for a minute: this time last year, Gomez was weeks away from canceling the remainder of her international tour to focus on her mental health and lupus recovery. She entered a rehab facility in Tennessee, went cold on social media, and scared a lot of her dedicated Selenator fans (especially since this wouldn't be her first time entering into recovery). She seemed worn down, and lost. But it turns out that all she needed was little life reboot because by the end of 2016 she was building steam and gearing up for 2017, her Best Year Ever. She found new love, new collaborators, and newly realized independence. As someone who also turned 25 this year, I *get* it.
It's easy to focus on the downfalls of young star's careers because that is often what makes a juicy headline, but what if, instead, we focused on all the incredible successes and milestones that our favorite entertainers hit in a year. I've never really considered Gomez a role model, but the girl's absolutely killing it.
Ahead, let's examine everything that happened to Gomez this year.

February — The Grammys

A month into the new year and Gomez is already gearing up for her first major public appearance. While she did not perform at the 2017 Grammys, she did attend alongside her newly confirmed boyfriend, Abel Tesfaye aka The Weeknd. She also spent time pre-show with a few members of Hillsong Church, a community that the singer is heavily involved with.

March — VOGUE cover

On March 16, Gomez revealed that she was the cover star of the April issue of VOGUE. It marked her first ever American VOGUE cover, and a change in status. No longer just Bieber's ex, she's finally being treated like an independent young artist with a vision of her own.

March — 13 Reasons Why

This is when Gomez's year went from lukewarm to scalding hot. 13 Reasons Why, the Netflix series produced by the singer, premiered on March 31 and changed...everything. The show sparked intense conversation around depression and suicide in teens, and served as a catalyst for critics and fans alike. Gomez used the series as an entry point to talk about her own bouts with depression and mental health, a topic she tried to steer clear of a for most of her teen years. In her caption she revealed that she's been a fan of the book and it's message for more than half a decade. "Our show @13reasonswhy came out tonight and I couldn't be more overwhelmed with pride and joy," she wrote. "After 7 years of holding onto this book, I couldn't of picked a better time for this message to exist. Jay Asher wrote a beautifully tragic, compelling story and we were lucky to have brought it to life. Thank you to every single soul that put their heart into this passion project."

May — The Met

If anyone doubted the legitimacy of their pairing, all it took as a glance at them on the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art to realize that they are legit smitten with each other. With her personal life at level 100, she is more comfortable than ever to experiment with her fan base with her two songs of the summer releases.

June — "Bad Liar"

"Bad Liar" was one big mic drop from the 24-year-old who starred in the music video four times over again. It plays on themes of lust, betrayal, and suspicion, all centered around a curious high school student. It's a far cry from "Hands To Myself" to say the least.

Fetish. Thursday.

July — "Fetish"

The first video for the song "Fetish," her second single featuring Gucci Mane, is just a close shot of Gomez's glossy lips mouthing the lyrics to the song. It can be described as sultry, mature, edgy, and artsy. The old Selena would have maybe used her own image as the subject of the fetishization, centering herself at the center of the narrative as a reward for a man. But instead, she is the one fetishizing. She's in control in the song, and in her life.

July — Mini movie teaser

The more into the year we get, the more layers of Gomez we see. Now, she's less Taylor Swift (no more basic business here), and way more Sofia Coppola from the looks of this video. With content like this replacing mirror selfies on her social media feed, it's not a stretch to say that Gomez is going to continue surprising us. I mean, she still has 5 more months to have the best year ever.
