The Catwalk Comes To The Sidewalk In The Garment Disctrict

When we think of sidewalk art, we usually picture some cheesy chalk drawings, or—this being NYC—some creatively placed litter. Starting Thursday, the art-form is getting a major makeover courtesy of the Fashion Center Sidewalk Catwalk, an installation of Ralph Pucci mannequins reworked by the likes of Jason Wu, Catherine Malandrino, Thom Browne, Prabal Gurung, Maria Cornejo, and Badgley Mischka. The project is an effort to spruce up the less-than-beautiful Garment District, and has 30 one-of-a-kind works of art by 30 designers on Broadway in the forms of models walking along Broadway between Times Square and Herald Square. The creations, sponsored by Macy's, feature everything from fresh flowers and greenery (Betsey Johnson) to pop-art (Tommy Hilfiger). Come Labor Day, the mannequins will be auctioned off, with the proceeds going to NYC-based charity Materials for the Arts. Who knew concrete could be so chic? (WWD)
