Perhaps because we're based in NYC, the idea of a giant insect crawling down our lapel turns us a shade of fashionable chartreuse. But, it seems the practice of wearing living Maquech beetles as accessories is an ancient Mayan tradition that still has some supporters in Mexico. And clearly, today's high-end beetles are stylishly bedazzled, but that didn't prevent customs officials from snagging one off a woman trying to cross the U.S. border — and we don't blame them.
Now, we (hesitantly) admit, they look fairly cool in this video, and we expect to see Lady Gaga sporting one any minute now — but personally, we'd rather keep these critters on the other side of the computer screen. (Huffington Post)
