Skin Care's Latest Trend Has Us Cleaning Out Our Medicine Cabinets

Hygge — the Danish concept of warmth and coziness — had its moment, and that moment ended the day temps rose above 50 degrees. (So, this past weekend, if you live in NYC.) Now, we're embracing lagom, which we have to admit isn't quite as fun, but feels very adult.
Lagom translates to "not too much, not too little," and is actually pronounced 'car-prom.' The concept, while new for us, has been part of the Scandinavian mindset for centuries, and is about living a balanced, proportioned, "just right" life. Basically, Goldilocks was onto something big.
Click through the slides ahead to find out how to apply lagom to your beauty regimen.

Simplify & De-Clutter

Do you really need five old mascaras, four shades of red lipstick, and three different sizes of curling irons? Not if you want to adopt the lagom lifestyle you don’t. Evidence suggests that clutter increases anxiety (but also creativity, on the flip side), so work to create a streamlined medicine cabinet and makeup bag and you'll be well on your way to finding inner balance.

Lagom is about living with just the essentials, nothing more, nothing less, so we’d recommend starting with skin care and cutting down to cleanser, serum, eye cream, moisturizer, and SPF. This set of facial oil refills checks all the boxes: The packaging is sleek and simple; the product takes up next to no space; the formula is both hydrating, repairing, and anti-aging; and it's perfect for stress-free travel.

Eliminate The Artificial

Lagom is the opposite to excess, so products that contain "extras" like artificial fragrance, parabens, sulfates, even shimmer, are considered unnecessary. Instead, look for plant-based ingredients in everything from your moisturizer to your shampoo to your fragrance.

This roll-on perfume oil is 97% natural and 75% certified organic. Predictably, it does not smell like sweet candy made in a lab, but rather woods and warm amber and a rainy fall day.

Multitask: Makeup

It follows that when you simplify, you need the items you do keep around to work overtime. Look at your makeup, skin, and hair favorites and ask yourself: Can this product do three different things?

This creamy tint seems pricey, until you factor in that it's the perfect neutral lipstick, bronze-y cheek flush, and beige eyeshadow.

Multitask: Skin

A fragrance-free balm, made with skin-loving butters and gentle cotton, that is so much more luxe than a drugstore salve and hydrates and heals lips, cuticles, and red, irritated patches.

Multitask: Hair

A hair perfume seems like an indulgence, but not if it doubles as a UV protector, static reducer, and shine enhancer. And yes, also makes your blowout smell like fresh rose petals and green apple.

Chill Out

Stress releases the hormone cortisol, which attacks collagen and triggers inflammation, thereby making breakouts and dull skin even worse. Stress also put a strain on hair growth, which is why people often suffer from thinning hair in difficult times. Adopting a lagom lifestyle will reduce stress and encourage balance, and you'll notice the results when you look in the mirror.

To get you started on the track to serenity, soak your skin in this ultra-relaxing gel mask that contains arctic spring water and Nordic birch sap to hydrate, deliver glow, and quell redness on the spot. If you keep it in the fridge, you're in for even more of a treat.

Offset Your Indulgences

Of course, you'll go crazy if you deny yourself of a little excess every so often. We all need a good splurge, late night out, and entire pizza to ourselves on occasion. Just give yourself some TLC the next day to get back on board the lagom bandwagon.

Going on, say, a bachelorette weekend? Bring this Detox Kit along. It has a face wash, eye cream, day lotion, and night cream, all rich with nutrients and antioxidants, to turn around damage fast.
