A Reformed Goth, This Indie Perfumer Still Won’t Wear Blue Denim

Kavi Ahuja Moltz

"Designer at D.S. & Durga. We are an independent fragrance house creating perfume and cologne in small batches using premium-sourced, raw materials. My partner, D.S., makes scents inspired by outdated herbal wisdom, native ritual medicine, lore and legends, historical movements, and Americana. My designs balance that historical sensibility with the more modern style I drew on when I was an architect."

What were your first pair of jeans?
"Black Levi's when I was 14 and starting my goth years. I ripped the seam down the side and fastened it back up with a line of 200 safety pins."

What are you wearing?
"Current/Elliot jeans and a Levi's denim jacket. I only wear high-waisted jeans. It's just what suits my body type and what I find flattering. I like my jeans, like the rest of my clothing, to have some structure. Nothing loose or too stretchy. I like to feel that they are holding me in."

How many pairs of jeans do you own?
"Four or 5, all black, all tight. I'd love a pair of white jeans — as soon as I find the right pair."

Do you have a preferred philosophy when it comes to jeans: Sexy and skinny, or loose and comfy?
"Slim. I generally prefer a tailored look in all of my clothes."

What's your favorite way to wear your jeans and with what?
"With a tucked-in, well-fitting white V-neck, or with a tucked-in silk blouse. And always with some sort of heel, unless it's a Sunday and I'm taking our son to the park."

What's your favorite example of celebrity jean-wearing (i.e., Bruce Springsteen's Born in the USA album cover)?
"I love Bruce Springsteen."

What do you love most about your favorite denim pieces?
"These denim pieces are timeless."
