Forget what You've Got Mail taught you about the death of the independent bookstore. Indie shops for the literature-obsessed are alive and well, especially in New York City. And Aaron Hicklin, the editor-in-chief of Out magazine, is helping to ensure that New Yorkers keep their noses in books with his new project, a totally unique bookstore-salon-art-installation hybrid.
The One Grand summer pop-up at the South Street Seaport is officially New York's new downtown destination for intellectual stimulation and lit-spiration. Curated with Whisper Editions, One Grand's tomes have been carefully assembled around the "desert island" selections of a variety of notable names and celebrities; in other words, people like Tilda Swinton, Tom Ford, and Annie Lennox have curated your summer reading list. And no, we don't think anything could be cooler.
In celebration of the installation's launch, Refinery29 got an exclusive look at Swinton's bookshelf. Click through to see 12 of the books the actress is obsessed with, and then pop down to One Grand to pick a few up for yourself.
