Weddings today cost couples an average of $30,000, so it was only a matter of time before brides and grooms started to get creative about covering the bills. Between renting out a space, feeding the guests, and standing up to mounting expectations of glitz and glam (thanks, Pinterest!), it's a wonder how anyone can afford the day of their dreams. But, does that mean couples should start turning to their family, friends, and even the general public to help them pay for a picture-perfect ceremony?
According to Cesar Hernandez-Topete and Miguel Munoz, an engaged duo in Long Beach, California, the answer is a resounding yes. They dated for over four years and had been domestic partners for a year, but as soon as Prop 8 was struck down, they set their sights on a wedding. Unfortunately, they didn't have the funds, so they took to the crowdfunding site GoFundMe to solicit money from the Internet.
Now, there's no denying that they're an adorable team — but, does that mean it's appropriate to ask perfect strangers to help them throw a wedding? We all want to support gay couples who've had their rights suppressed for way too long, and they have a pretty great reason for being low on wedding funds (they're currently in the process of adopting a child, which they say has cost them some $15,000). But, as a trend overall, we're hesitant to support this — after all, it seems to exacerbate the thought that every wedding needs to be a large, fancy affair.
