The 7 Knit Trends Saving Our Winter-To-Spring Wardrobes

A few sunny days under our belts and we're ready to wave goodbye to winter — dark days and short evenings begone! — and say a big hello to spring. But as much as we daydream about park picnics and cherry blossom, we can’t step into our warm-weather wardrobes just yet. We still have chilly mornings, biting winds and unexpected showers to contend with. So while we gaze longingly at summer dresses and shorts, we still need knitwear to keep us cosy.
Of course, stepping into a new season, we don’t need to be quite as swaddled as we were during December. Lighter, brighter layering pieces are what we’re leaning towards. Think knit skirts, dresses and co-ords, colourful cardigans that Harry Styles would be proud to own and chic mesh separates. Keep reading for our favourite finds that will see you through this tricky transitional time.

Pointelle knits

Pointelle knits may make you think of your childhood but there's no better pick for spring. Often featuring a pretty, openwork pattern, they vary from light layers like this H&M find to more cosy options, such as this Dôen design.

Knit sets and co-ords

When in doubt, opt for a knit co-ord. Not only are they seriously comfy but they come in a huge range of colours for any occasion, whether you're keeping it casual or looking for a more formal fit. Each of these jumpers has a perfectly matching bottom.

Short-sleeve knitted tops

As the mercury rises ever so slightly, we’re turning to short-sleeve knits to see us through the seasonal shift. Kitri’s cherry sweater balances cute and kitsch, Hush's simple grey tee is a trusty everyday basic and Free People’s vibrant yellow pullover is bright, bold and beautiful.

Knitted midi skirts

Knitted skirts are working their way up our wish lists, marking themselves out as the new season must-have. We spotted them at New York Fashion Week AW23 — Michael Kors’ gorgeous grey iteration, to name just one — meaning they’re set to hang around for next season, too.

Sheer knitwear

Bringing a casual yet cool vibe to any outfit, this subtly sexy style will liven up any look. It may not be the warmest option — especially if you're just slipping it over a bra — but it’s an easy way to elevate a 'jeans and a nice top' situation.

Knit dresses

From the bar to the boardroom, a knit dress has your back. Easy to style with a simple trainer or knee-high boot, it’s an everyday wardrobe essential and everyone should have at least one. Midi lengths are our current obsession, with playful patterns getting us even more excited for spring sunshine.

Graphic print knits

Graphic prints aren’t going anywhere this season. The go-bold-or-go-home style has cemented itself as a spring staple. Bright stripes, abstract prints and clashing colours are all up for grabs, putting a pop of colour back into your cold-weather attire.
