Every Bryce Walker Murder Suspect On 13 Reasons Why Season 3

Warning: There are spoilers from 13 Reasons Why season 3's ending ahead.

The first season of 13 Reasons Why was about learning why Hannah Baker (Katherine Langford) chose to end her life. It was a murder mystery, just in reverse. The third season of the series returns to this whodunnit concept, albeit in a completely new way. At the beginning of 13 Reasons Why season 3, Bryce Walker (Justin Prentice) is found dead in the river. As clues and evidence pile up, makeshift investigators Ani (Grace Saif) and Clay (Dylan Minnette) learn that everyone had a reason to want Bryce dead.

Over another 13 episodes, season 3 unpacks the motives of everyone at Liberty High, and beyond, who could have been behind the murder. Was it Jessica (Alisha Boe), seeking revenge on her rapist? Montgomery (Timothy Granaderos) looking to hide a secret? Since Bryce was far from a good person, the list of who could have hated him enough to kill him is pretty long. But if everyone wanted Bryce gone...who made it happen?

Click through to untangle this web of suspects, and find out who really killed Bryce and why.

Justin Foley (Brandon Flynn)

Justin is suspected because, unbeknownst to his adoptive family, the Jensens, he is still using drugs. Bryce found out about his drug use between Bryce leaving Liberty High and returning to play in the homecoming game. Justin also had a bottle of prescription pills intended for Bryce in his room.

It’s revealed that while Bryce did know about Justin using drugs, he actually kept him out of harm’s way, paying off the dangerous drug dealer Justin was in debt to and giving him Oxycodone to use so he wouldn’t have to purchase heroin.

Chloe Rice (Anne Winters)

Chloe was Bryce’s girlfriend who he sexually assaulted while she was unconscious. She became pregnant with his baby, but had an abortion. Clay (Dylan Minnette) suspects that maybe Bryce found out about the baby, was angry, and Chloe killed him. It’s revealed later that Bryce only learned Chloe was pregnant at the homecoming game.

Zach Dempsey (Ross Butler)

Zach was friends with Chloe and took her to get an abortion. Clay suspects that maybe Bryce was angry at Zach for stealing his girlfriend (he didn’t; Zach and Chloe were just friends) and taking her to get the abortion. Then there’s the fact that Bryce was the one who broke Zach’s knee during the fight at homecoming, ruining his chances of playing football in college.

Though Zach didn’t kill Bryce, his actions led directly to his death: Zach, angry that Bryce stole his future, found Bryce on the pier, beat him up and broke his leg. Zach then threw Bryce’s phone in the water, leaving Bryce for dead.

Tony Padilla (Christian Navarro)

Following the trial, the Walker family called ICE on Tony’s family and had them deported to Mexico. Though Tony was devastated over the loss of his family, Bryce didn’t know that his father was making that move, and felt horrible about the situation.

Tyler Down (Devin Druid)

Tyler initially believed that it was Bryce who instructed Monty to sexually assault him in the bathroom before spring fling the year before, and confronted Bryce about it, with a gun. He was also the person who found Bryce’s body in the river, as he planned to end his own life that day. However, Bryce ultimately helped Tyler with his Monty situation by threatening Monty at homecoming to leave Tyler alone; Tyler had no reason to want Bryce dead.

Olivia Baker (Kate Walsh)

Olivia Baker is the mother of Hannah (Katherine Langford), who died by suicide not long after she was raped by Bryce. When Bryce goes to Olivia’s hotel to apologize for his actions, she shuts him down. Later, Olivia calls Clay and tells him that she wants to kill Bryce for what he did to Hannah, just before Bryce was found dead.

Nora Walker (Brenda Strong)

Nora is Bryce’s mother. Clay finds a letter from her at their home, in which Nora writes that she wishes she was never Bryce’s mother and that she hates him. The truth, though, is that Bryce wrote that letter in an exercise with a therapist, and that at the end of his life, he had a good relationship with his mother.

Clay Jensen (Dylan Minnette)

Bryce and Clay have always had a contentious relationship, but when Clay goes to Bryce’s home to invite Ani (Grace Saif) to the homecoming game, they clash, and Bryce tells Clay that he’s going to have sex with Ani as revenge. At the game, Clay sees Bryce kiss Ani, prompting Clay to send Bryce threatening texts.

Ani (Grace Saif)

Ani had a sexual relationship and friendship with Bryce before his death, but things turned sour when she wanted to end it and Bryce got violent with her, grabbing her arm while he was drunk.

Jessica Davis (Alisha Boe)

Bryce raped Jessica at her party the year before. Since then, she’s started a survivor’s group and wants to disband boys' sports as she believes the culture promotes sexual violence.

At the homecoming game, Bryce tells Jessica he has to give her something, and wants to meet down at the docks in order to do so. Jessica goes to the docks, and brings Alex with her...which leads to Bryce’s death.

Alex (Miles Heizer)

Clay and Ani suspect that Alex may have killed Bryce because he was blackmailing him. Alex was buying steroids from Bryce, but when they noticed the price jump, they assumed it was because Bryce learned that Alex had gone to a sex worker and was holding it over his head in exchange for cash. The reality of the situation is that Alex and Bryce were hanging out — hence why Bryce gave Alex a “friends and family discount” on the steroids — but stopped after Bryce pulled a cruel prank.

Alex is the one responsible for Bryce’s death. He goes with Jessica to meet Bryce on the dock, where he finds him bloody and unable to move. Alex offers to help Bryce up, but when Alex does, Bryce accuses Jessica of setting him up to have Zach find him. Alex realizes that Bryce will only continue to cause more pain if he’s alive, so Alex throws him into the water, leading to Bryce’s death by drowning.

The thing that Bryce wanted to give Jessica was a tape he made, apologizing to her and explaining why he wanted to become a better person. It’s this tape that is planted on the person that the gang pins Bryce’s murder on.

Montgomery de la Cruz (Timothy Granaderos)

Bryce learned that Monty had sexually assaulted Tyler and threatened him at the homecoming game: He would go to the police with all the other crimes Monty committed if he ever even looked at Tyler again. While Monty did threaten Bryce at the game, he wasn’t the person who hurt him. Monty had an alibi in Winston, the boy that he hooked up with from Hillcrest, but refused to tell anyone the truth.

Monty is arrested for sexually assaulting Tyler and is killed in prison just hours before Ani speaks to the police and places blame on him. “Let the dead bury the dead,” Ani implores Deputy Standall (Mark Pellegrino). Ultimately, that’s what they all decide to do.
