Meet The Globe-Trotting Pair Behind Our Favorite Coachella-Worthy Label

We first discovered For Love & Lemons, when we were on the hunt for the perfect Coachella duster, and since then, we've been obsessed with the brand's breezily unique aesthetic. So, we obviously made it a top priority to meet the minds behind the fine contemporary designs to see what makes these chicks tick!
Founders Gillian Mahin and Laura Hall met when they were tots, masterminding their first successful business: a lemonade stand in the foothills of Jackson Hole, Wyoming. They honed their boho eyes while studying up on marketing and fashion, traveling the world, and setting up shop at a design firm in Sydney — but lucky for us, they've landed right here in downtown L.A. We have a sneaky feeling these gals are on to something big (and just a smidge more lucrative than peddling lemonade!), and you'll catch our drift if you click through the chic snaps of their killer style and super cool studio.

When did you first realize fashion was what you were meant to do?
Gillian: "I knew that it was meant to be as soon as I got my two-speed Hello Kitty Sewing machine when I turned six. I was hooked and found myself creating an entire wardrobe for my four year-old sister, which I later made her model in fashion shows for my parents and friends. One of the first dresses I made was a little red overall dress with pearls and vintage floral pockets — my mom just sent it to me in the mail, and we have it framed in our office!

Laura: "When I was distressing jeans on a brick wall until my knuckles were bleeding at my internship at One Teaspoon. It was all-in from there!"

On Laura: FL&L Floral Lulu Dress, Vintage Studded Military Jacket, and Frye Boots. On Gillian: FL&L Burnout Dress, and her mom's Vintage Penny Lane Jacket.

Who are your ultimate style icons?
"These are just a few: Abbey Lee Kershaw, Brigitte Bardot, Kate Moss, and of course, all of our eccentric friends!"

You've been buddies forever. How did you actually end up becoming partners?
"We've been best friends and in business together since our lemonade stands in elementary school, and have pretty much been attached at the hip since. We always wanted to own a legit business together, just as soon we were knew we could handle it. We chose design because it was something that inspired us, and we're passionate about it!"

What blogs and mags do you dig through for inspiration?
"We absolutely adore all Australian magazines; when we used to live there, we stocked up on Russh, Black Book, and Australian Vogue — they have the coolest editorials, and always know what's up in the fashion world. Some blogs we follow on the daily: Refinery29 (of course!), Studded Hearts, our girl Ashley Glorioso at Purse n' Boots (accessory heaven), and Fashion Salade, but there are so many it's hard to pick just a few!"

What are the main influences you pulled from, for this line?
"FL&L is influenced by a certain girl. She is the kind of girl a Led Zeppelin song is written about. She has impeccable taste, she inspires people, goes against the grain, loves to travel, and meet interesting people. She's unpredictable and lives life to the fullest. You can find her talking surrealism over cappuccinos in Paris with sexy Parisian artists, or you can find her on on the back of a Ducati cruising to Joshua Tree with a leather-studded man. She embodies the free spirit and loves living the life she lives! We thrive off capturing that energy and translating it into our line."

How did you get into the biz?
"We were both working at a little ski bar in our hometown, Jackson Hole. We had some freedom in our wardrobe options, so we wanted to spice it up a little (using our tip money, of course). Laura and I started making our own dresses, which we had to wear with ski hats and boots. Soon enough, all the other waitresses were requesting these dresses. Before we knew it, we were spending our evenings and mornings before and after work hand-sewing garments for all the other girls. We hosted a fashion show at the end of the ski season (in the ski bar), and some images were leaked online. We had a few stores and showrooms reach out to us, so we decided to take it more seriously — and the rest is history!"

If you could have dinner with one person, dead or alive, who would it be?
Gillian: "James Dean, because I think he might be my soulmate (I wish)! Or maybe Salvador Dali — I mean, why not, I'm sure that would be one interesting dinner!

Laura: My grandpa — he was a man of many stories and very inspirational. I never got to know him as well as I would have liked."

Where exactly is the studio, and why did you choose this space?
"Our space is located in Downtown L.A.'s Art District. It's a really cool area to get inspired, and we are surrounded by people our age, all with their own unique, creative businesses. There really is never a dull moment! We also have to be in this area, because it's where we have our clothes manufactured, so we're constantly busy running back and forth from our studio to the factory to fabric meetings, and so on."

Do you ever fight? How do you manage to work so closely without any drama?
"We're fighting right now trying to answer these interview questions. Ha! We normally only fight when it comes to choosing a meal to share, or boys (not because we like the same ones, but because we always think the other can do better). Other than that, we have been through the worst together, and got most of it out of our system in high school!"

What trends are you embracing right now?
"Hmm, you might have to fill us in on what the trends are, we normally try to avoid anything trendy, and stick to what we know — sexy and comfortable!"

Who are your all-time favorite designers?
"If we had to narrow it down, our top picks would be Balmain, Valentino, and Alexander McQueen. All creative geniuses, and all so unique."
