The Nighttime Routines Of 5 Totally Badass Women

Many websites (including this one) have exhaustively reported on prominent women's morning routines, from supermodels to actresses to CEOs. Little is discussed, though, about what they do to get ready for bed, and maybe that's for good reason: Nighttime rituals are much more intimate. They're the kinds of things only our roommates/significant others/cats see — and they're decidedly less glamorous than our a.m. makeup prep.

That's why we asked five influential, gorgeous women some nitty-gritty questions about how they get ready for bed. After all, nothing is sacred on the Internet, right? Ahead, a sex columnist, a beauty director, and others spill all the details of their bedtime rituals. Click through to, perhaps, find some evening inspiration for yourself.

What time do you normally go to bed?

“I’m a night person. I generally go to bed around 2 or 3 a.m. I work from home as a writer, so I find that often the window between 11 p.m. and 3 p.m. is a good time to get writing done, because nothing’s happening, no one’s texting you, etc. I wake up around 10:30ish.”

What do you normally like to wear to bed?

“I usually wear nothing. However, I try to make myself wear a bra. I have a vivid memory of being in middle school, and watching Oprah with my mom. Halle Berry was the guest, and she said something along the lines of, 'You should always wear a bra to bed, otherwise your boobs will end up around your knees.' For some reason, that scared me enough that it’s stuck with me 15 years later. So, occasionally I’ll wear a bra to sleep — always one of my Wacoal bras. I have big boobs, and I’ve found Wacoal is the best in terms of support and comfort if you have boobs above a D!”

Do you shower before bed or in the morning? What kinds of products do you like to use?

“I generally shower in the early evening, after I work out. Afterward, I moisturize my whole body with Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion. If I shave my armpits or bikini line, I always put Tend Skin on the areas I shaved. Honestly, Tend Skin saved my life — I was one giant ingrown hair until I discovered it. On my face, I use Ole Henriksen Truth Serum, which is essentially vitamin C gel. Then, I use a vitamin C moisturizer by the same brand. If my face is particularly dry, like in the winter, I use Rodin’s Olio Lusso. And, I always put Moroccanoil on my hair.”

What’s your bedtime skin-care ritual?

“If I have the energy, I’ll wash my face. But, I generally just slap on Avon Anew Vitale Night Cream over my makeup, which might be bad?”

Do you wear fragrance before bed, or set a relaxing ambience with candles or room sprays, or anything else?
“I have a ton of vanilla Ikea candles, so sometimes I’ll light one of those before bed, to try and 'set the mood' if me and my girlfriend are gonna bang. Very cheesy.”

Do you read or watch anything before bed?
“I generally read The New Yorker or Harper’s before bed. Or, I watch TV — my standards are Broad City, House of Cards, Orange Is the New Black, and The Daily Show.”

Do you have blackout curtains or wear a sleeping mask?
“Neither. I need the sun to help me wake up. Left to my own devices, I’m pretty certain I would just sleep until the end of time. Waking up is the single hardest thing I have to do every day.”

What sorts of body products do you apply, if anything, before bed?

“Nothing on my body before bed… Am I supposed to do that? Fuck.”

How many hours do you usually sleep?

“I feel like the perfect amount for me is nine — as in, I won’t be fighting the impulse to take a nap for the entire day if I sleep nine — but I try to make it eight, for the sake of productivity.”

Do you feel like you prioritize your sleep?
“I do! I am sooo cranky if I don’t get sleep! If I’m tired, I can’t think, and if I can’t think, I can’t write. And, actually, there was recently a study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine that found that insufficient sleep can decrease sexual desire and arousal for women. So, basically, more sleep means a better sex life!”

What do you normally like to wear to bed?

“I wear old-school plaid, flannel L.L. Bean pajamas. I even managed to get past their censorship rules and have them embroider 'Ladyfag' on the pocket! In the summer, I wear my birthday suit to bed!”

Do you shower before bed or in the morning? What kinds of products do you like to use?

“I take a long shower in the morning; it's the only thing that'll get me out of bed!”

What’s your bedtime skin-care ritual?

“It's always a good night when I don't get home from work a bit drunk and pass out in my makeup. If [that happens], I take off my makeup with MAC Wipes or...I use Dr. Jart+ Micro Water. Then, I put on Kiehl's Midnight Recovery Concentrate, which feels sexy as it seeps into your skin with moisture and smells so good!”

Do you read or watch anything before bed?
“I'm an insomniac when I'm not working. I usually like to space out to Netflix before bed, but usually end up with addiction problems where I'd start watching a show and fall into the trap of ‘just one more episode!’ which ends up being never-ending! So, I've been trying to put my computer away before bed and read 'til my eyes hurt.”

Do you have blackout curtains or wear a sleeping mask?

“If I'm going to bed late — meaning it's already morning and the sun's out — then I use an eye mask, à la Holly Golightly!”

How many hours do you usually sleep?

“On a good night, I sleep over seven hours; unfortunately, it's usually closer to five or six.”

Do you feel like you prioritize your sleep?
“You know what they say: ‘Sleeping is my drug, my bed is my dealer, and my alarm clock is the police!’”
