1 Piece, 3 Ways: The Official “Skinny Hipster” And Her Skinny-Hipster Jeans

Advertisement There may be many skinny hipsters, but Nifesimi Oluwole is the official skinny hipster. Well, at least, that's what the title of her popular blog — Skinny Hipster — tells us. And, granted, she is skinny and (we guess) a hipster. But, as you can see, Oluwole is not your typical aloof, chain-smoking, unwashed, ripped-T-shirt-wearing hipster. Nigerian by birth and New Yorker by choice, Oluwole is chic, sharp, colorful, enthusiastic, smiling, and fun.
Anyway, looking for a little help in making our semi-hipster selves a little bit more colorful and coordinated, we had Oluwole show us how to make the most out of that absolute staple of the skinny-hipster diet — the skinny-hipster jean! As you'll see, she puts her sleek, matte-black Old Navy Rockstar Skinnies through their paces, giving us three looks that run from Chelsea casual to Bushwick boho.
Click through for some top dressing tips that should get you through the season, even if you're a little less hip and skinny than your average bear.

Okay, let's start cracking. As you can see, adding a loose blouse with elbow-length sleeves takes those rather sharp, rocker jeans and adds a bit of softness. Make sure your top ends where the zipper on the jeans does — you don't want the best parts of your body to disappear underneath it.
Of course, what really softens this look are the loafers. Sometimes rolling up your cuffs and showing off a little ankle can look tough. With a pair of slightly feminine, subtly eye-catching flats, however, it adds an innocent, gamine boyishness to the whole ensemble. Try to keep those cuffs no more than two or so inches off of where your ankle meets your foot. P.S., if you're sticking to a black-and-white look, remember to throw in some loud colors with, say, a nice bright clutch.

Remember how we said that rolling up your cuffs can look tough? Yeah, well this is what we meant. With an aggressive — and brightly colored — high heel, attention goes straight to the feet, so feel free to roll up a little higher here. BTW, that tank and the moto-jacket vest don't hurt in the attitude department.
Another thing to think about is contrasting textures and colors for impact. Black jeans with a matte-leather-style finish might disappear when paired with, say, some matte-leather black boots. But these patent-fuchsia shoes actually bring out the texture of the jeans (and vice versa). Hard to miss, right?

Now — this is some prime skinny-hipster stuff. A simple matte finish on the jeans allows Oluwole to play with colors and patterns up top. Notice how she grounds it all, however, with the black detailing on her blouse.
Let's take one last took the cuffs, shall we? With heels this sky-scrapingly high, you might want to do one more inch or so of cuffing. We mean, with ankle huggers like these, you're going to look slim anyway, so go ahead and show off a little skin.
