L.A.'s Top African-American Salons & What The Owners Swear By

The bond between an Angeleno and his or her hairstylist is deeply rooted in something we like to call "tress trust." So, rarely will someone divulge the deets of their locksmith for fear that the love affair will be experienced by many — and booking an appointment will become tougher than securing a table at Laurel Hardware.
But, as you already know, R29 refuses to keep our finds under lock and key! We're always excited to share with you our stomping-ground secrets (take a peek at our Beauty Black Book if you haven't already!), including the best spots for African-American hair care. Considering there are so many salons in Lala Land (seriously, they're like Starbucks!), discovering the right stylist can be a daunting task for a woman with textured tresses.
From weaves to treatments and everything in between, take a peek at the crop of hair-care pros around town whose knowledge of African-American manes are second to none.

Renia Edittorio
Owner of Odessa Renia Salon, 9021 Melrose Avenue (near North Almont Drive); 310-358-0358.

Her mane objective:
To provide clients with the very best healthy hair care through excellent customer service and comprehensive knowledge.

If you have natural hair:
"Natural hair needs oils to help lock in moisture — make sure to apply in conjunction with a leave-in conditioner. Steam treatments are also great because curly hair is more porous and tends to be thirsty."

If you have pressed or straightened hair:
"Be sure to begin with clean hair and tools before pressing to avoid that burnt-hair smell. Also, be careful not to over apply product as this can weigh the hair down. Pressed hair should behave like relaxed hair."

If you have relaxed hair:
"Because most of the elasticity has been removed from relaxed hair, use caution when blow-drying. Concentrate on smoothing the roots, then lightly go through the ends. Excessive tension can weaken the hair shaft causing unnecessary breakage."

If you have pressed or straightened hair:
"Heat protectants should be applied before using heat styling tools! This will save the hair shaft from damage."

If you have relaxed hair:
"Deep conditioning treatments on a regular basis are imperative to maintain the moisture and protein balance the hair strand needs to prevent breakage."

Kimberly Kimble
Founder of Kimble Hair Studio, 1106 North La Cienega Boulevard (near North Holloway Drive); 310-652-1822.

Her mane objective:
Style and healthy hair maintenance should coexist.

If you have natural hair:
"Make sure to always keep it moisturized using a leave-in conditioner (like our Brazilian Nut & Acai Berry blend), oils, and silk pillow cases or bonnets that keep it from drying out. For finished natural styles, use a shine spray or shine serum. But, if you're searching for a curly or kinky look, use our Bounce Back Curl Revitalizer for moisturized, shiny curls."

If you have pressed or straightened hair:
"After you shampoo and condition hair, use a leave-in conditioner that contains thermal protection to prevent damage."

If you have relaxed hair:
"Make sure to condition very well, and try not to use much heat at all. You can use our Brazilian Nut & Acai Berry Conditioning Masque as an intense conditioning treatment by washing your hair and leaving it on for 15 to 20 minutes."
