How do you define feminism? Merriam-Webster's definition is pretty simple: "The belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities." But, in reality, it's a much more complicated concept, as the incomparable Tavi Gevinson so eloquently explains in the video she made for
MAKERS: Women Who Make America,
a digital platform dedicated to championing the stories of American women who are making a difference.
The style icon and founder of Rookie addresses the stigma surrounding the word feminism that causes women to disassociate themselves from it: "If you are a feminist, you're angry…or man-hating…taking up space. No one wants to be that person." Gevinson goes on to argue that young women aren't encouraged to speak up, which only compounds the problem.
