5 Unexpected New Year's Outfits That Totally Skip The Sequins

Raise your hand if you're sick of wearing glitter on New Year's Eve. Not to get all Scrooge on the holiday, but besides it being the time of year when expectations are the highest, and disappointment even higher, it also has a strict party code, dress code, and romance code that's frankly so last year (and the year before that, and the year before that, and...well, you get the picture). And when the only thing worse than being preoccupied by figuring out where you'll be at midnight is finding the perfect sparkly, metallic, over-the-top look, well it seems like it might just be time to switch things up — and the easiest way to kick that off is with your look.

Why wear a dress when you can wear pants? Why wear high heels when you can wear sneakers? Why wear something skin-tight and bodycon when you can wear something shiny and vinyl? Exactly. It's time to take the New Year's style "rules" you currently abide by (because, let's be honest, we all have 'em) and leave them on December 31. Next year should be about embracing your personal aesthetic. Here are five outfits that'll work for however you choose to celebrate.

Rule No. 1 when wearing a miniskirt in the dead of winter: Wear tights! Now that we've gotten that out of the way, this look makes way more sense. Here, layering is key. Cover up your legs so you can wear that super-short patent number you had to have last month (even though you knew it wasn't the most seasonally appropriate thing), and wear that sheer turtleneck you also bought last month (again, cool, but not so practical) over our all-year-long savior, a bodysuit. With the entirety of your outfit's foundation being black, accessories are key to adding a bit of color: Why not go bold with a silky robe coat (hot-pink hue optional, but preferred) and some leopard booties?

Calvin Klein Underwear Seamless Unlined Bodysuit, $62, available at LUISAVIAROMA; Paskal Polka-dot Flocked Tulle Turtleneck Top, $265 $159, available at Net-A-Porter; Topshop Black Vinyl Mini Skirt, $85, available at Topshop; Michael Lo Sordo Women's Pink Silk-satin Trench Coat, $910, available at Lyst; Isa Tapia RheaC Leopard Suede, $489 $342.30, available at Isa Tapia.
Dress? Check. Pants that look like jeans? Check. A bag that's literally called "Cinderella"? Check. This all-black(ish) outfit doesn't just show the power of layering — but also how you can be "dressed up" while still being pretty damn comfortable. And TBH, I couldn't think of a better New Year's resolution than that.

Magda Butrym Sicily Dress, $1,185, available at Magda Butrym; M.i.H. Jeans Lou Cropped High-rise Flared Jeans, $260, available at Net-A-Porter; Mango Patent Sock Boots, $99.99, available at Mango; Dolce & Gabbana Dolce Box Cinderella Mini Shoulder Bag, $1,745, available at MyTheresa; Argento Vivo Front Hoop Earrings, $58–$68, available at Nordstrom.
You know that rule that says you should only really have one statement piece in a look? Yeah, this outfit is the antithesis is that. One, it has a graphic turtleneck. Two, it has embellished kitten heel/bootie-esque shoes. Three, it has a loud metallic jacket. Grounded out with a pair of wide-legged jeans and a simple mini-bag, let's just say these eye-catching pieces all look pretty damn good together.

Ganni Etsu Printed Mesh Turtleneck, $99, available at MyTheresa; Each x Other Wide Leg Cropped Jeans $452 $203, available at Farfetch; Rejina Pyo Silver Josephine Blazer, $741.68, available at Rejina Pyo; J.W.Anderson Embellished Kitten Heel Pumps, $1,710.22 -$855.11, available at Browns Fashion; Forever 21 Silicone Crossbody Bag, $19.90, available at Forever 21.
In our opinion, nothing screams cool like a band T-shirt layered underneath a dress, especially when that dress is tulle and princess-like. Topped off with a leather jacket (tugged off the shoulder, obviously) and styled with socks and sneakers (okay fine, the socks have a tiny bit of shimmer to them), and this is that ready-to-party outfit no one else will be wearing (but everyone will be wishing they were).

H&M T-shirt with Printed Design, $17.99 $9.99, available at H&M; Molly Goddard Velvet Strap Tulle Dress, $2,170.28 $1,085.14, available at Browns Fashion; Balenciaga Swing Biker Jacket, $3,350, available at Balenciaga; COS Metallic Socks, $9, available at COS; Vans Authentic Sneaker, $50, available at Zappos.
Consider this the closest thing to wearing your pajamas while still looking fancy. Velvet pants, faux fur coat, silky camisole: All the most luxe fabrics you love are here — what more is there to say?

Charlotte Camisole in Blush, $92, available at Journelle; Topshop Velvet Pleated Trousers, $68, available at Topshop; Shrimps Junior Coat, $464.23, available at Shrimps; Carel Opera 3-strap Heels, $355, available at Opening Ceremony; Hoorsenbuhs Diamond & Silver 'H' Chain-link Bracelet, $750, available at Barneys New York.
