5 Beauty Trends That Died With The Old Taylor Swift

No one does rebranding quite like Taylor Swift. She's gone from the sweet country star in spiraled ringlets and cowboy boots to Time's 2017 Person of the Year, a badass who bleaches her eyebrows, rises up from the dead, and rocks glitter lips. Haters definitely gonna hate, but you have to admit that her evolution is unparalleled and certainly unpredictable.

We've seen a different Taylor emerge each time an album drops, so in honor of the pop star's birthday tomorrow, we've decided to round up all the the beauty trends that she's brought to life... and subsequently killed. After all, the old Taylor's dead — and so's her sparkly blue eyeshadow.

Prom Updos

Angelic updos were on-brand when Taylor Swift's teardrops were falling onto her guitar. But now, she's switched to using big barrels and texture sprays for looser, messier, less-precise waves.

Back in 2009, she was all about intricate updos with piece-y spirals framing her face.

This one takes us back. T. Swift hit the red carpet for the premiere of Hannah Montana: The Movie with soft curls and rosy lips.

Frosted Blue Eyeshadow

Monochromatic makeup was big this year, and as of late, Hollywood makeup artists have been matching their client's eyeshadow shade with the undertones in their hair for a look that's pulled-together in a subtle way. But back in the day, Taylor was all about the obvious matchy-matchy makeup, sporting shadow that was the exact shade of her baby-blue eyes.

Swift was the picture of youth and innocence at the 2008 Grammy Awards, where she won Best New Artist of the year. Her corkscrew curls, sparkly blue eyes, and flushed cheeks were nothing short of adorable.

Even as she got older, retiring her side bangs and replacing them with blunt fringe in 2013, Swift still loved the blue shadow. Although in the more recent past, she seems to have given up the makeup look for good.

Side ponytails

Like many teens, Taylor was a loyal fan of the side pony. Still, the trend never really took off. Ponytails are all over the red carpet, but they tend to fall the usual way — straight down the back.

Swift wore minimal makeup at the CMT Music Awards back in 2008 and let her curly side ponytail and that gem-encrusted headband take center stage.

For the 2008 Young Hollywood Awards, Swift wore her hair in a pageant-perfect side-pony, swooped bangs and all, but gave the sweet style a little edge with thick black liquid liner.

Hair Accessories

Speaking of headbands... We're not saying all hair accessories fell off the grid by way of Taylor Swift, but loud, bedazzled, floral ones sure did. Now, we reach for embellishments that are more minimal-chic.

The huge flower headband Swift wore in 2009 isn't an accessory we see making its way back onto the street-style scene any time soon.

We're guessing a lot of fans begged their moms for a stretchy, sparkly headband from Claire's after Taylor started wearing them. Now they're collecting dust in the attic with all their Blair Waldorf-inspired cousins.

Bold Cat-Eyes + Red Lips + Blunt Bangs

In 2012, Swift did a complete 180 with her beauty look. She chopped blunt bangs, drew a dramatic cat-eye, and put on bright red lipstick — all at the same time. It's a lot of look, but it worked for the period.

Another 2012 example of the hair and makeup trend in action was when Swift took to the German red carpet at the MTV EMAs in Frankfurt.

We're not saying this isn't a great look, but it ended around the time the Harry Styles romance did — because everyone needs a new style to feel finally clean.
