Scam Your Way Through Halloween With These 5 Scammer Costumes

As we approach the final months of 2019, it’s the perfect time to revisit the major trends that emerged this year. Double weddings are in, heels are dead and Miley Cyrus is going through... something. But if we had to choose one phenomenon that truly defines the last 10 months, it'd be scammers. Sure the art of fraud isn't unique to 2019 (remember the 2016 election?) but this year's cheat list is a step above the rest.

To name a few iconic scammers, there's the Steve Jobs-obsessed Theranos founder, Elizabeth Holmes, who was first suspected of fraud in 2018 and is currently awaiting her 2020 trial. Then there’s Anna Delvey, or should we say Anna Sorokin, whose prison interview with The New York Times went viral in May 2019. She’s infamous for pretending to be a German heiress and swindling a bank employee out of $100,000, among other crimes. And let’s not forget Donald Trump, who is currently in some hot water due to...questionable use of his executive powers.

Now that Halloween is only two weeks way, we thought it best to commemorate the year of the scam with costume ideas. Here are 5 Halloween costumes that would make Joanne the Scammer proud.

At Refinery29, we’re here to help you navigate this overwhelming world of stuff. All of our market picks are independently selected and curated by the editorial team. If you buy something we link to on our site, Refinery29 may earn commission.

Elizabeth Holmes

Former billionaire and current Rikers Island resident Elizabeth Holmes has seen some high highs and low lows. But through it all, one thing has remained the same: her unabashed love for the black turtleneck. A proud Steve Jobs stan, the Theranos founder adopted the late Apple CEO's signature look... and you can, too.

This Halloween, throw on a black turtleneck, blazer, and trousers — and if you're feeling extra bold, a set of bloody fangs.

Secaden Cosplay Vampire Dentures, $5.99 Buy

Anna Delvey Sorokin

Fake German heiress Anna Delvey Sorokin pays former Glamour editor Anastasia Walker a lot of money to style her, but we can help you dress like the conniving 28 year-old for next to nothing.

From little white dresses to her infamous chokers, here's everything you need to give Anna Sorokin a taste of her own medicine by stealing her identity this Halloween.
Zara Swiss Dot Jumpsuit, $49.90 Buy
Wild Fable Simulated Suede and Cord with Discs Choker Necklace Set, $10.00 Buy
Nordstrom Opaque Control Top Tights, $15.00 Buy

Billy McFarland

If you haven't seen either of the two documentaries surrounding Fyre Festival, then what the hell were you doing in January? Basically, Fyre Festival co-founder Billy McFarland sold the concept of a euphoric music festival but delivered nothing more than cold bologna sandwiches and FEMA disaster relief tents.

If you want to channel this scamming whiz for Halloween... just dress like a bro. And don't forget the mouthwash, in honor of our hero and “wonderful” leader who was willing to “take one for the team.”
Up&Up Antiseptic Mouthwash Green Mint - 50.7 fl oz, $2.89 Buy
J.Crew Slim Ludlow Easy-Care Stretch Cotton Dress Shirt, $69.50 Buy
H&M Plus-Size Pull-On Pants, $24.99 Buy

Donald Trump

Does this one really need an explanation? Two words: impeachment investigation. While our 45th president rarely makes good on his promises, he did follow through on the ultimate con: Lying and manipulating his way into our country’s highest political office.

If you must channel POTUS, throw on a red tie, an ill-fitting suit (like come on Trump, you're a billionaire) and for the love of everything honest, skip the (real) MAGA hat.
Prfcto Lifestyle Make Kanye 2016 Again Hat, $17.99 Buy
Uniqlo Easy Care Regular Fit Long Sleeve Shirt, $29.90 $9.90 Buy
Banana Republic Oxford Nanotex® Tie, $59.50 Buy

Caroline Calloway

If you want to celebrate a "scammer" this Halloween without repping someone who is guilty of actual criminal wrongdoing, influencer Caroline Calloway has reclaimed the word after being criticized for some mistakes she made when throwing a workshop for her fans. (Cleverly leaning into the term, her latest event was called "The Scam.") To channel her this holiday, just check off all the Instagram fashion boxes. Think Outdoor Voices (for your back-to-back Pilates classes), Orseund Iris crop tops, vintage Levi's, and the ever-present flower crown made of $$$ orchids. Throw in some By Far boots, a Staud bag and Glossier balm dot com and you've got the perfect CC-approved look. But, of course, no Caroline Calloway costume is complete without an extra grainy selfie and a 2,000-word caption.
Orseund Iris Cropped Off-The-Shoulder Ribbed-Knit Sweater, $260.00 Buy
LaCrown Orchid Headband, $28.94 Buy
Levi's High-Waisted Mom Jean, $98.00 Buy
