How The Royal Wedding Has Turned Into A Soap Opera

If he had asked me a year ago, I would have absolutely said yes to Prince Harry's proposal. Now, no offense to Harry, I'm not so sure. Becoming a part of the royal family sounds good on paper, but the courtship between the Prince and his fiancée Meghan Markle was no walk in the park, and with the wedding just a few days away, thing have gotten downright traumatic.
I feel like I've tuned into the world's poshest soap opera (you might know it as Downton Abbey) and there's no way to change the channel. What should be the happiest day of Markle's Hallmark movie life has instead become wracked with family drama, last-minute cancellations, and someone spray-painting the word "fork" all around Windsor Castle. We just need someone we thought was dead to show back up, and this puts even Days Of Our Lives to shame.
All Markle wants is a nice wedding and likely an extremely jaunty hat — not to have every facet of her life dissected and dragged through the tabloids mere moments before she walks down the aisle. This poor girl!
So much has happened, that it can be hard to keep track, so ahead we've laid out all the soap opera moments from Markle and Prince Harry's life, starting from the very beginning.

They had to go into hiding.

Prince Harry and Markle's relationship had a dramatic start. While they managed to privately see each other for a few months before the press got wind of it, the moment the cat was out of the bag, they had to hide out with friends in Toronto. Ben and Jessica Mulroney, a TV host and stylist, respectively, opened up their home to the royal couple, where they waited out the reporters who had descended upon Markle's house.

Some family members aren't invited to the wedding.

Fast forward to the engagement, and Markle's extended family did not hold back their feelings about getting snubbed on invites to the wedding. Her uncle, half-brother, and estranged half-sister are among those who weren't invited to the celebration, and they had no problem taking their complaints to the press.

"She’s clearly forgotten her roots," half-brother Thomas Jr. Markle told the Daily Mirror. "It’s torn my entire family apart."

Her step-brother tried to sabotage the wedding.

Speaking of her half-brother, he straight-up tried to sabotage the wedding by sending a letter to Prince Harry encouraging him to reconsider.

"Dear Prince Harry, It's not to [sic] late. Meghan Markle is obviously not the right woman for you," the letter, obtained by InTouch Weekly, reads. "As more time passes to your royal wedding, it become [sic] very clear that this is the biggest mistake in royal wedding history...Its [sic] very apparent that her tiny bit of Hollywood fame has gone to her head, changing her into a jaded, shallow, conceited women [sic] that will make a joke of you and the royal family heritage."

Her exes are talkin' shit.

Specifically, Markle's ex-husband Trevor Engelson had been pitching a TV show about a divorced woman who strikes up a romance with a prince. Sound familiar? Luckily, The Sun reports that Markle got Engelson to drop the project — for now, at least.

Plus, people like Josh Silverstein are going around talking in detail about dating the actress when they were teenages, telling all about their first kiss. Can't this girl catch a break?

Her dad was coming to the wedding but then wasn't but then was and now isn't.

Most recently, all the drama has been focused on Markle's father, Thomas Markle, who, after suffering heart problems and a public embarrassment after it was revealed his paparazzi photos were staged, decided not to go to the wedding and walk Markle down the aisle. But then he changed his mind. And then he changed his mind again. As of right now, he won't be attending, but at this rate, he'll flip-flop a few more times before the big day.

It's all been fueled by the ultimate soap opera villain, TMZ.

And at the center of all of this are news outlets like TMZ, who were a big part of the drama with Thomas Markle and therefore responsible for this last-minute snafu in the first place. What should be the happiest week of Markle's life has also become the most embarrassing, with touchy family relationships and past mistakes getting hung out to dry for all to see.

It's safe to say this soap opera has jumped the shark.
