This Is Why Kim Kardashian's Makeup Always Looks So Good

We always imagined this day would come: Kim Kardashian-West, she of the extravagant lifestyle and impeccable contour, has live-streamed a video in which she walks us through her everyday makeup routine. But, the thing that we never imagined would come from this long-awaited day? That we would have something in common with the high-profile reality star and the way she gets ready.

Ok, forget for a minute that she uses 25 products, not including tools, as part of her express routine. And at $1,145, they cost about as much as one's monthly rent. One-percenter stuff aside, Kim is us with our makeup bag: She rocks out to classic playlists, frets over lighting, mutters to herself here and there, flubs lash-curling, stresses over time, and questions her winged eyeliner skills. (“Shit, I should have winged that liner a little bit more?” she thinks aloud while examining the final look.)

Click through for the play-by-play of each step and all the products that Kardashian-West uses in the video — and then some. The scene: a Toronto hotel bathroom. The characters: Kim K, her goofy sidekick Jonathan, and her rap-star husband. The makeup tips: abundant. Let’s dive in.

Bonus: You can watch Kim K.'s 10-minute tutorial video on the final slide.

Kardashian-West starts her video with an admission: “Oh, Shit. I’m in Toronto, and...I forgot face wash. But I already started my eye makeup, so I’m going to be super sloppy and use a Neutrogena makeup wipe,” Kim says, running the wipe along her face and neck. “These are my favorite,” she stresses.

While lamenting the sucky hotel lighting, Kardashian-West applies this illuminating primer all over her face. “The pearls are iridescent, which makes your skin look amazing,” she writes on her site. “It also helps even out your skin tone.”

Next, Kardashian comes with a heavy hitter: a brand-new (and ultra-pricey) gel moisturizer from La Mer. “I’m using this as my moisturizer today,” she says. “It’s this gel, it’s amazing.” Kardashian applies it all over her face and neck, while entourage-member and self-professed “food god” Jonathan Cheban pops up from the background holding a Kanye West towel, screaming, “I got the new merch!”

Kardashian-West picks up another high-roller product—what she IDs as “this Giorgio Armani sheer shimmer stuff,” — and shakes the bottle before dispensing a pump of liquid onto the back of her hand. She then applies the light illuminator to the high planes of her cheeks, down the nose and along the forehead with a fluffy, angled contour brush. “This adds shimmer underneath foundation because I just love a little extra glow,” she says.

Kardashian-West mentions on her site that she sometimes swaps in this more affordable illuminator for the Giorgio Armani Fluid sheer.

OK, step five and we’re finally onto foundation. After debating whether to use Chanel foundation or Armani (rich-people problems!), Kardashian-West opts for the later. Kardashian confesses that she still uses Giorgio Armani Shaping Cream Foundation. “I'm seriously obsessed and was so sad when they discontinued it,” she writes on her site. She suggests this as an “amazing” alternative.

“I always put it on my hand first,” she says, before dabbing it on her face with a fluffy foundation brush. “Does anyone else put foundation all over their lips?” she asks the camera, before offering this tip: “Always make sure you get the back of your neck.” While applying, the reality star mutters, “God, the pressure of getting ready so fast in front of you.” Take a breath — we feel ya, Kim.

Concealing time! Kardashian-West uses this brush to apply concealer, saying it's “great to use when filling in the lines around my mouth... It really does the job.”

Next, Kardashian-West whips out a seriously pro concealing palette from a company that specializes in stage makeup. She applies the “really dry concealer” under her eyes, on the top of her nose and above her lip, “for a contouring effect,” she writes. She also hits the marionette lines. “Lately, as I’ve been getting older, I have I just fill [them] in with concealer and it really does the job,” she shares.

Though we don’t see this step on camera, Kim uses another concealer as part of her routine. “I use Make Up Forever Full Cover Camouflage Cream, a creamier concealer, on top of the dry concealer. This gives me a dewy look,” she writes on her site.

After concealing under the eyes, along marionette lines, and down the center of the nose, Kardashian-West dampens a Beautyblender to blend. “And I always clean my brush,” she says.

Though this step doesn’t make the cut for her 10-minute routine on camera, Kardashian-West shares on her site, “For more of a shimmer and highlighting effect, I put the Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector on top of my concealer.”

“I don’t have time to do all my major contour,” she shares, before vaguely discussing unnamed pink and yellow powders applied under her eyes and near the sides of her nose, respectively, presumably used for color correcting and a barrier when doing her eye makeup. Perhaps she uses this puff to put them on? We’re not sure. She simply says she uses it for applying her “fave Laura Mercier Translucent Powder.”

In the next frame, Kardashian-West magically shows up with powder under her eyes mid-bake. We don’t see her applying the powder, but she writes on her site, “I apply the powder under my eyes and leave it there until I finish my contouring... This ensures that your under-eye powder doesn't get creasy, and that it will set perfectly and last all day.” After applying a thick dusting of powder under the eyes, she dusts her face, neck, and behind the ears.

It’s nowhere near lipstick time. But Kardashian-West gets distracted looking at all the possibilities that shine through her clear makeup bag. “Ohhh, I love a YSL gloss,” she says. “Or should I use... Should I do a color, like a good, Kristin by Kylie Cosmetics? Or should I do a good Candy K?” Hmmm...we wonder.

Putting the makeup bag down, she gets back to the task at hand, announcing, “Alright. I’m gonna contour.” This is what we’ve been waiting for, folks. “While I'm traveling, I don't have time to do all of my major contour, so to get a great contour, I usually mix a few colors,” she says. One is Smashbox Suntan Matte, which is no longer available. But the brand’s Bronze Lights is very close.

The reality star mixes Smashbox Suntan Matte with colors in this contour kit. “I always start with my forehead, in the hairline. You’ve gotta go in the hairline a little bit, especially because my face is so much more pale than my body — and it makes your forehead look smaller, too,” she says.

After covering the perimeter of her hairline, she contours under her neck, around the chin, up to the eyebrows, and down the nose. “I contour on both sides as well as under the tip. This will make your nose look really short and defined,” she writes on her site. Note: That under eye powder is still baking, y’all.

Like most of the contouring steps, this highlight step is also done off camera. “After I finish my contour, I apply Anastasia Beverly Hills Illuminator above my cheekbones,” she notes on her site. “My fave color, So Hollywood has been discontinued, but I also love this product in Peach Nectar.”

On her site, Kardashian-West notes that she applies this universally-flattering cult-favorite blush next.

“Shoot, I really need to trim my brows,” Kim says, while filling in her eyebrows with this pencil. While noting that she hasn’t seen Hollywood brow shaper Anastasia of Beverly Hills for a month, she dusts off the color-correcting powder with a brush.

What Kim giveth, Kim taketh away. “The key to getting a perfect undereye white — but not as white as Mario and I did back in the day — I put a little bit of highlighter...I’m not even going to tell you guys, because I have some exciting things coming out,” she teases before dotting the undereye with fluffy brush (presumably loaded with highlighting powder). Did she just hint at her own makeup palette to be released? Who knows. And we still don’t know what she’s using. But on her website, she credits brow gel as the next step, though she applies it in the video after mascara.

Apparently, Kardashian-West uses this compact little trio of shadows on her eyelids. Though in the video, she uses it earlier in the process, by mixing two of the shades and applying along the lower waterline. And good news: this bronzy eyeshadow trio is actually on sale at the Lorac site for a mere $10 (originally $27). Score!

Though Kardashian-West says she had already done her eyeliner before filming the video, she lists liquid-liner application on the upper lash line as the next step on her site. “I usually go for a winged liner look using this MAC liquid liner in Boot Black,” she says.

Next, she reaches for a mascara wand, coating both sides of her upper lashes, adding, “See, I do my mascara and I can not keep my mouth closed.” Ah — so it’s not just us.

"To be honest, I'm not that good at doing my own false lashes, so I usually don't wear them when I do my own makeup,” she shares on her site. “Instead, I usually use two types of mascara: the first being my go-to, L'Oreal.”

After clamping down on her upper lashes, Kardashian-West grumbles about one lash not curling the way you want it to, after having put mascara on first, then cleans up mascara-stained lids with a cotton swab, adding, “You guys, how does this liner look? It’s really stressing me out, I can’t get ready in front of a guy, ever.” Um. It looks pretty perfect to us.

At this point, Kanye has come home and can entertain Jonathan. Things are looking up. Kim reaches for another mascara, saying, “I kinda want to do this last mascara,” what she calls a “tiny wand.” She applies to the upper and lower lashes, saying, “I like to layer mascaras when I don’t do lashes... Shit, it’s way too clumpy. But I love a clumpy bottom. Does anyone else like that...” she trails off, while searching for her lash separator.

Next, she debates using a touch of gold — no make that bronze — on the lower waterline. “Mmm...I’ll stick with what I have,” she resolves. We don’t see her using this very product, but she name checks it on her site. What we do see is her dusting the outer corners of her upper lids. “I love taking contour and blending,” she says.

Would it be a Kardashian video without any Kardashian-branded product placement? No way. (Mama Kris didn’t raise no fools.) She resolves her earlier debate with, “I think I’ll just do a neutral color today. Maybe Candy K?” She swipes it on after lining her lips.

If we’ve learned anything it’s that this girl loves to layer her makeup. And her approach to lip color is no different: “To get my neutral lip, I put on three different lipsticks,” Kardashian-West shares on her site. “The first coat is NARS Belle de Jour lipstick.”

The third color used, presumably added off camera, is a hint of this tinted lip shine by NARs. “Afterward, I take a tissue and blot,” she writes.
