What A 1%er Wedding Looks Like

Photo via Instagram.
Mason jars and fairy lights? Cute, but they barely make a dent in the super-sized budgets some couples have set for their big days. No, a "real" wedding apparently calls for ice sculptures, couture wedding gowns, fireworks, foie gras starters, and Lionel Richie personally on hand to serenade the couple during their first dance.

Think we're exaggerating? Think again. Several well-known couples have spent the equivalent of a small country's GDP on their big day. Far-flung destinations, superstar entertainers, and the most regal wedding wear can all contribute to a bill that would make even Donald Trump balk. And, as Kim Kardashian's first wedding (which clocked in at the $10-million mark) showed us, expensive nuptials aren't guarantees of everlasting domestic bliss.

So when it comes to your own wedding, you may opt for a city hall ceremony and your brother-in-law's garage band — but these couples didn't.

Angela Yeung & Huang Xiaoming (October 2015)

The Chinese celebrities made headlines with their recent wedding, splashing out on a pre-nuptials photo shoot in Paris, a custom Christian Dior gown that took months to make, a cake taller than Shaq, and, of course, dinner, drinks, and luxury gift bags for around 2,000 guests.

Petra Ecclestone & James Stunt (August 2011)

When your father is Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone, you can afford to go wild. The British heiress wore custom Vera Wang for her lavish wedding in an Italian castle, which boasted live performances by Andrea Bocelli and the Black Eyed Peas. Her sister Tamara's 2013 wedding was less costly, but still eye-watering, with a £7-million price tag.

Reported cost: £12 million (or about $18 million)

Nell Diamond & Teddy Wasserman (October 2014)

Southern France's landmark Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc was the fairy tale-esque setting for the Wall Street power couple's elegant nuptials (planned by the same team that carried out the royal wedding in 2011). The bride's father — the former CEO of Barclays — hosted the three-day bash, during which Diamond rocked two different custom bridal gowns, one by Olivier Theyskens and one by Prabal Gurung — both of whom were in attendance; Gurung also designed the bridesmaids' gowns. Guests partook in an array of special events, including assorted activities on the breathtaking property (think tennis, diving, lounging by the pool), danced to celebrity-DJ sets, and were treated to a spectacular fireworks show at the lavish reception.

Reported cost: $1.1 million

Anu Mahtani & Sanjay Hinduja (February 2015)

When billionaire Sanjay Hinduja — formerly one of India's most eligible bachelors — wed his longtime girlfriend, designer Anu Mahtani, it was enough to make even Bollywood's heavyweights blush. The weeklong fete featured live performances from the likes of J.Lo and Nicole Scherzinger, with no fewer than 16,000 guests turning out to celebrate. The main event was held at Jagmandir Island Palace in Udaipur, India; getting there was easy, thanks to the 200 private jets that were chartered by the couple in honor of the occasion. Other festivities included a kickoff party at the Taj Mahal Palace luxury hotel in Mumbai, attended by scores of India's biggest celebs.

Reported cost:
£15 million (or about $23 million)

Michael Jordan & Yvette Prieto (April 2013)

Wanna be like Mike? It'll cost you. Jordan's second wedding, held in Palm Beach, FL, included performances by Usher, Robin Thicke, and K'Jon, with flowers and candles galore. We suppose a guest list that includes Tiger Woods, Scottie Pippen, and Spike Lee calls for something special.

Reported cost: $10 million
