14 Times Rihanna Made Us Want To Wear Rainbow Lipstick

Like a mood ring, Rihanna's look constantly changes depending on what she's feeling at the moment — and very rarely sticks around for too long. Her hair has gone from a pitch-black pixie to red mermaid waves, with so many styles in between. Her makeup game is undoubtedly on lock. Yeah, we've dubbed other celebs beauty chameleons, but RiRi holds the throne. And soon, she'll have a line of her very own to experiment with.

The Barbadian singer has smeared almost every color of the rainbow across her pout and rocked it each and every time. “[Rihanna's] fearless. It’s easy to do fun, daring shades with her because she can pull it off,” Mylah Morales, her makeup artist, told us.

But even if you don't have a red carpet event in the near future (or a talented makeup artist in your back pocket), you can still go bold like Rihanna. Morales says the key to pulling off daring colors is to keep everything else on your face subtle — all you need is a simple canvas of foundation, concealer, and mascara. "Your face is sort of your palette," she says. "It has to be refined and done well. Then, you can pull off any lipstick you want."

To inspire you to channel your inner bad gal, we've rounded up the her best lip moments from the years. We'd also like to add that a little dose of confidence à la Rihanna won't hurt. So just pop on some "Diamonds" and get inspired to shine bright, y'all.

“My favorite lip looks are really the red carpet and Fashion Week [ones] because they’re more thought-out," says Morales. They were looking to do something "fun, young, and edgy" when Rihanna wore this hot pink to the Kids Choice Awards in 2008. They definitely nailed it — and the black liner is a great rocker-chic addition that doesn't completely overwhelm the look.

The glossy black pout RiRi sported during Paris Fashion Week in 2014 is up there on the list of Morales' favorite looks. On top of being totally slay-worthy, it also comes with a neat hack. For darker, more out-there colors, Morales often starts by lining the lips with eyeliner. "Obviously, you can’t find a black lip liner, so we’ll use a black eyeliner...same goes for the dark, smokier purples we’ve used,” she says. "Eye pencils are great because [they're] waterproof and easier to work with."

The singer also rocked black lipstick and orange hair this past summer — on a fishing trip. Who knew a dark pout could work in the front row and the great outdoors?

Whatever the look, it's always very much a collaborative effort between Morales and Rihanna. "It depends on what we’re doing and the mood, sometimes she comes up with it and sometimes I do," she says. "But usually, the inspiration comes from the entire look in general. The look, the event, it all goes hand in hand.”

Here, the bold pink lip she wore at Stella McCartney's Fall 2014 show is an unexpected, yet complementary, addition to her orange shades and green jacket.

If you're going for a super glam look, take a cue from Rihanna and match a dark, ruby red lip with some major jewelry (and maybe even your dress). While this isn't the most unexpected lip look on the roster, it's one of RiRi's sultriest — and easiest to pull off. Morales notes that when wearing a darker shade, bronzer is especially important — particularly for those with paler skin tones — to avoid looking washed out.

Matte muave lipstick isn't necessarily a shade we would think to pick up, like, ever. It's weird...it's unexpected...both qualifiers for the perfect Rihanna-approved color.

The sparkly blue lipstick Rihanna wore to her NYFW party this past week was Anastasia Beverly Hills' Liquid Lipstick in Paint, Morales told Teen Vogue. The lip outline? Eyeliner, yet again. Props to RiRi for pulling off a blue hue without looking like a Smurf.

Last week wasn't Rihanna's first blue rodeo. In 2013, the singer tried out a lighter shade topped off with a questionable mullet (which we have since forgiven).

When it comes to getting your hands on such outrageous shades, Morales suggests hitting up "the younger, more makeup artist-geared brands" like Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics, Nars, and Make Up For Ever.

A vampy, oxblood color can work just as well on Halloween as it does on the red carpet. Love the look? Check out this The Craft inspired shade from Gold Label Cosmetics. You can layer it on for a deeper hue or do a light swipe for a softer shade.

Rihanna's all-army-green ensemble at Balmain's Fall 2014 show called for a pop of pink, says Morales. "We wanted something that would make [the lip] stand out a little more.

This nod to the '90s was all Rihanna's doing. "I’ve trained her to do her own makeup," Morales says. "So that if she decided to go out, she can basically apply her face pretty nicely.” And leave it to the Bad Gal to do just that and have us all wanting to resurrect all those brown lipsticks from back in the day.

Because why not match your metallic pout to your silver strands? You only live once, y'all.

The dark green shade Rihanna wore to the iHeartRadio Music Awards in 2104 was another she picked out herself — texting Morales the night before to get her stamp of approval — and another done with eye pencil.

This look was such a stand out hit with our beauty team, I actually ended up recreating it for our Halloween cheap challenge last year. Unsurprisingly, there aren't a lot of moss green shades on the market, so I took a page from Morales' makeup book and used an eyeliner all over my lips.

An orange-red traffic cone shade is guaranteed to stop people (or, in Rihanna's case, paparazzi) in their tracks in the best way possible. For a similar look, we love Nars' Semi Matte Lipstick in Heat Wave.

A glossy pastel purple lip pairs perfectly with Rihanna's glam cat-eye and silky dress. We're pretty sure this violet shade is the same Free Spirits Cosmetics Purple Haze color Rihanna selfie'd back in April or the equally stunning Lolapop. Either way, we think RiRi might have something to do with them both being out of stock — and why you should get on that waiting list, stat.
