Two young men were shot on the ice last night at the Bryant Park skating rink, leaving one in serious condition, while the shooter remains at large. Just after 11 p.m., three shots rang out, according to several reports. One of the victims, 14-year-old Adonis Mera, was shot in the back and may be paralyzed. His brother, Jorge Arias, told the Daily News, “He can’t move anything from the waist down." And, another witness, Christopher Guerrero, told The New York Times that Arias couldn't move his legs. The other victim, an unidentified 20-year-old man, was shot in the arm but is expected to recover.
Some witnesses told police that they heard the gunman demand the older skater's coat before he began shooting, while others said the shots came from outside the rink.
The other 50-odd skaters dropped to the ice when the shooting began. They were then quarantined and questioned by authorities before they were released. The police have continued searching the area for the suspected shooter, described as "a black male with dreadlocks dressed in a red hooded shirt." (Daily News)
