Pole dancing has already become a multidimensional phenomenon — it has even been turned into a fitness class. A new video, officially released today, shows us yet another side of the dance genre — one that pushes against the confines of our conventional ideals of sexiness, showing women dancing for themselves. The short documentary features 16 amateur pole dancers of different shapes, sizes, and colors, all doing their thing. They're definitely gorgeous (and their outfits are pretty much the greatest), but that's not really the point: The most beautiful part is how happy these women look when simply celebrating and being comfortable in their own bodies. Each woman talks about what the experience of pole dancing is like for her, so you get to see how it's both uniquely personal and also empowering. Why I Dance is the result of a Kickstarter campaign that was successfully funded last year in just 48 hours. As you watch these women dance confidently and skillfully on their own and with each other, it isn't hard to see why.
