Fashion Math: The ’90s Edition

Even though we've been practically bombarded with Clueless and Kurt Cobain references over the past few months, we're actually stoked that '90s style seems to be sticking around. Like a wide-legged pant of the '70s or oversized blazer of the '80s, there are a few key pieces from the pre-aughts decade that have solidified themselves as staples, despite the association with their heyday. And, no, tattoo chokers did not make the list.
Flannel button-downs, silky slips, and relaxed-fit denim are three prime examples that can truly transcend time. They suggest a certain grungy vibe but won't make you look like you're trapped in the past — or late for Halloween.
So, to properly party like it's 1999, we've styled nine looks that achieve the perfect amount of '90s wink — no costumey outfits in sight.
