The Academy Awards are both the end of the awards season and its apex. That's why we were thrilled to once again see the triumph of the Lady Suit, a style statement that's been conspicuously present at all the big awards shows this year, from Jenny Lewis and Haim at the Grammys to Emma Stone and Lorde at the Golden Globes.
Canadian musicians — and twin sisters, if you couldn't tell — Tegan and Sara Quin both wore menswear-inspired looks to the Academy Awards. Sara wore a fetching black dress with leather-look panels, with a pair of woven oxfords by Cole Haan. But, our favorite is the full-on tuxedo worn by Tegan, and designed by The Kooples, a French brand that's an R29 favorite — and that has a history of dressing some majorly cool couples. Tegan and Sara will be performing their song “Everything Is Awesome” from The Lego Movie tonight, also in outfits by The Kooples. Having already seen their collaborators The Lonely Island on the red carpet looking extremely fetching in tuxes of their own, we think this'll be a performance worth watching. And, we can only hope the gender-bending style statements continue into next awards season.
