See Madonna Before She Was Madonna & Other Rock Icons, Pre-Fame

Everyone has to start somewhere, even icons. Photographer Deborah Feingold was there when some of the biggest names in music started from the bottom. And, now she's here with a new book of her work. Feingold has been photographing rock gods for three decades now, but Music is the first photo anthology of her work.
Take Madonna, for example, who Feingold photographed ahead of her debut album in 1982. "This shoot only took 20 minutes. We were each on the cusp of our careers, and I had actually called a bunch of magazines asking if I could shoot her for them," Feingold tells Paper. "Finally, Star Hits said, 'Yeah sure.' I don't think they even used the photo as a cover. We shot it in my apartment in the Village, which turned into a studio. She was made up already and had so much charisma."
Ahead, Feingold shares some of her portraits of stars like LL Cool J, Mick Jagger, and Prince.
