The New Sonia Rykiel Campaign Is Like Ad Porn For Design Nerds

There's a certain type of person who reads magazines for the advertisements, who considers people like Helmut Krone and Helen Lansdowne Resor as important as Diana Vreeland and the houses of Wieden & Kennedy and Doyle Dane Bernbach more storied than Chanel. These are ad people, and the new Sonia Rykiel fall campaign posters should be one for the books.
Directly inspired by French midcentury advertising posters, the advertisements drew from the work of Bernard Villemot (of Orangina and Perrier) and Raymond Savignac (of Yoplait and Bic) to produce a surreal, cut-and-layered shadowbox with Sam Rollinson wearing whimsically boxy, graphic Sonia Rykiel separates against black-and-white lips, keyholes, and 2-D profiles. We've pulled some of the original advertisements to provide the ad some context (and a little lesson on the real mad men, for those who are more fashion buffs than advertisement buffs). (WWD)
