Oh Snap! 7 Tips To A Great Selfie

Let's clear the air before we dive headfirst (one arm extended above our beautiful visages) into the art of the selfie: There is no shame in taking a picture of yourself. Go for it; find the best mirror, perfect your duck pout, and snap that pic. Of course, achieving the perfect selfie is truly an art. A well-executed self-taken snapshot doesn't just capture your day as is and provide a couple of mood-boosting likes, but it can also make you feel good about yourself — especially when you look back on your funniest/loveliest faces.
There are two kinds of selfies out there: the selfie you've prepped in advance and the spontaneous selfie — the I-feel-fabulous-and-have-to-capture-this-moment kind of selfie. Figure out where you fall on the selfie spectrum, take out your camera, and get snappin'. These seven tips are the lifeblood of the art. Read them, learn them, become them. Feeling less selfie self-conscious is your new M.O.

Let's begin with the obvious: A selfie must be taken by yourself, alone. A picture of you and your friend (no matter how high you hold your camera above your head and crop out their pretty face) is not a selfie. Secondly, a picture of you alone that wasn’t taken by you alone is not a selfie; it’s a picture of you taken by someone else. Don't try and #selfie that, it'd be a lie. (LIES!)

A selfie does not happen in one shot. You have to make time. It's going to take a couple tries doing the same pose, and another five minutes choosing what variation of the pout looks best before Instagramming it. You've already invested time in your look; why wouldn't you spend time achieving the perfect pose? C'mon, do yourself and selfie some justice.

Which brings us to the angles. This is where you channel all the knowledge you’ve learned from serially watching America’s Next Top Model reruns. Long neck, jaw out, a slight tilt of the face away from the camera (but never losing eye contact with the lens), a slight smolder, and you've got yourself a #selfie.

We recommend angling your face downwards, holding your arm above your head, and working what you've got.

It doesn't matter where you decide to take a selfie. If the moment strikes randomly while you're waiting for the crosswalk sign to change, act on it. The only thing you need for the best selfie is daylight. You’re not Terry Richardson, so turn the flash off. Daylight (especially the diffused light on an overcast day) will smooth out your skin, and not cast hard shadows — unless you're standing in direct daylight (which is never a good look). Oh, also, ditch the mood lighting. This isn’t portraiture, this is a selfie.

No matter what kind of selfie you decide to make, a little self-deprecation (selfie deprecation?) goes a long way. This is a must. You can’t take a selfie too seriously. Let's be real here: Taking a photo of yourself and publishing it makes checking out your reflection in windows seem like child’s play on the vanity scale. A serious approach does not a good selfie make. Poke fun at yourself, exaggerate the duck face, work the angles, and throw up some deuces. If it’s a mirror shot, exploit the mirror. Have fun with it.

Hey, there comes a time when your feed of selfies starts to look the same. You've perfected the angles, know when the best daylight is, and how many shots it takes to get it right — and now where do you go? Apps. Get apps. Use them, and throw all caution to the wind because cat stamps, lasers, and glitter are the new "Put A Bird On It."

Above all else, be gratuitously you. If you feel the need to take a selfie riding a Citi Bike because you can't live without it, take that selfie riding a Citi Bike. Own yourself yourselfie. One ounce of shame or embarrassment will ruin it. This isn't photography y'all, these are selfies. Leave the refined, polished you at home and have a moment. Revel in it. Bask in your opulence, and show it off. One selfie is worth way more than 140 character updates. Go forth and selfie-brate. You deserve it.
