How To Stay Warm This Winter Without The Bulk

Most of us can look back on winters past and remember more than one occasion when we were so layered up we could hardly squeeze out of our front door, let alone into the driver's seat. Cold-weather dressing is a delicate balancing act of trying to stay warm while still looking our best (that is, without becoming a giant marshmallow), and it ain't easy. While we're firm believers that layers are the key to every great outfit, finding a formula that doesn't come across as bulky or — worse yet — totally uninspiring is a trying task for even the savviest dressers.

To get a jump on the seasonal drag and save ourselves from unwittingly creating the same tired combos day in and day out, we pieced together five no-fail outfit equations that will keep us toasty without weighing us or our style game down. First, we started with foundational layers that go above and beyond (think: a classic Cuddl Duds turtleneck or the brand's ultra-warm leggings) and built the rest from the ground up — adding eye-grabbing pieces like a colorful bootie or floral slip. From there, it's smooth sailing (or, should we say skiing?) with the addition of a few lightweight toppers. Find our fresh takes in the slides ahead, and get ready to flaunt these winter-approved looks — which you can actually move your arms and legs in, BTW — all season long.

The Turtleneck-Under-Everything Look

We all know the bummer that is parting with spaghetti-strap season, but what if we didn't have to? Ditch the notion that slip dresses (and if you're bold, strapless tops) can't transition into the colder seasons by layering a classic turtleneck underneath them. Top things off with a fleece-lined denim jacket, a pair of color-poppin' booties, and a few choice cold-weather accessories, like a pair of shearling leather gloves.

The Colorblocked Combo

Come winter, it's easy to give in to the seasonal color scheme (or lack thereof) and fall victim to an overly muted wardrobe. To make things feel a little sunnier, swap in a slim-fitting yellow puffer over a black fleece hoodie and your fave graphic tee. Round out the look with patterned trousers and equally colorful sneaks to pull off the whole colorblocked thing, winter style.

The Jeans & Cardi Combo

When the weather inevitably calls for the big guns, invest in a puffer jacket that's warm without all the bulk, like this slimmer-fitting version. From there, layer in a cozy wrap (it'll keep you from shivering when you've hung up your parka), and round out the casual vibe with a long-sleeve tee, skinny jeans, and a pair of platform creepers.

The Borrowed-From-Nighttime Dress

While a mesh maxi-dress is a decidedly nighttime staple, we're of the belief that you can never get enough wear out of your wardrobe. To make this evening piece pull daytime duty (without freezing your butt off), layer your warmest pair of fleece leggings underneath it all. An understated bralette, velvet brogues, and blazer-style trench add the perfect dressed-down finishing touches.

The Layered Mini Mashup

Just as your slip dress knows no seasons, your miniskirt (yes, really) is fit to make an appearance come winter, too. The key to pulling off this look is balancing the lightweight layers on the bottom with cozier layers on top, like this striped fleece top and
midi-length wool jacket. Add in additional weatherproof elements such as knit leggings, a scarf, and a chic wool beret to pull it all together.
