A Guide To The Heroes & Episodes Of Queer Eye Season 5

The Fab Five are in an all new city for Queer Eye season 5. After two seasons in Georgia and two seasons in Missouri, it was time for a change. The hosts headed to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for the fifth season where they made over a whopping 10 people. It was their biggest season yet.

For season 6, the crew will be heading to Texas, so enjoy the Philly episodes while they last. Tan France, Bobby Berk, Jonathan Van Ness, Antoni Porowski, and Karamo Brown hit the town hard. They went to local eateries and boutiques and hair salons (and, yeah, a couple of larger chains like Anthropologie mostly so Bobby could show off his wallpaper and artwork line with the brand). But for the most part the group focused on showing their heroes (the people they're making over) and the audience the best Philly has to offer. Don't worry, we included the locations for every episode in this slideshow, so if you ever hit the area, you can go where the Queer Eye hosts went.

It's worth noting that there is one special episode filmed outside of Philly — it's the Jersey Shore-themed episode where the Fab Five makes over a DJ in Jersey. Aside from that, it's all Philly, all the time.

Episode 1: "Preaching Out Loud" — Noah Hepler

Meet Our Hero: Noah Hepler is a gay pastor at The Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Atonement.

Why Was He Nominated? Members of Noah's church council saw how much work he was putting into his job while ignoring himself. So they nominated him for the show in hopes that the Fab Five would show him how to practice self-care and confidence in himself.

The Big Event: It's the 125th anniversary of the church, and it's in desperate need of a makeover. Bobby Berk to the rescue.

Most Tear-Jerking Moment: Karamo Brown learns that Noah carries a lot of shame over not coming out sooner, so he gathers other LGBTQ+ clergy members to meet with Noah. They help show him that the same grace he gives other people he needs to give to himself. He whispered "thank you" when when of the other clergy people pointed that out, and it was like a huge weight had been lifted off his shoulders.

Best Fab Five Antic: Jonathan Van Ness learning that Noah used to have a bowl cut and saying, "Not today, Satan." You just know from the moment that JVN learned they'd be doing a religious-themed episode, he was just waiting for a chance to say it.

Location Guide:
Antoni Porowski takes Noah to The Free Library of Philadelphia for a cooking lesson. Then Tan France takes him shopping at Theory. Bobby wants to give the church a nice flag to display, so he goes to Humphrys Flag Co. After that, Karamo takes Noah for his deep chat at the Front Street Cafe. Finally, JVN gets Noah's hair cut at The Duke Barber Co.

Episode 2: "Groomer Has It"

Meet Our Hero: Rahanna Gray is a mobile dog groomer, and she runs Stylish Pooch — a company that specializes in not just doggy haircuts, but also dying them super fun colors (safely).

Why Was She Nominated? Her parents Jill and Kevin were tired of seeing their daughter come up against so many challenges. They know she's great at what she does, and they nominated her so she could see her worth as well.

The Big Event:  A doggy fashion show. featuring Rahanna's various clients. The best kind of fashion show.

Most Tear-Jerking Moment: Rahanna's mobile dog grooming business wasn't so mobile, because her car had stopped running. So when the Fab Five surprised her with a brand new vehicle, everyone lost it. The joy on Rahanna's face (and her mother's face) would bring a tear to anyone's eye.

Best Fab Five Antic: Tan France pretending to be Anna Wintour at the fashion show and saying, "Florals for spring? Groundbreaking."

Location Guide:
Antoni wants Rahanna to start selling her own line of dog treats, so he takes her to Amelie's Bark Shop for inspiration. Tan took her to Old Navy to buy a new wardrobe. And Karamo had a frank chat with her at the coffee shop La Colombe Torrefaction.

Episode 3: "Father Of The Bride"

Meet Our Hero: Kevin Abernathy is a long father whose daughter is about to get married and move out of his house.

Why Was He Nominated? Kevin's daughter Haley nominated him because she wants him to be okay when she leaves even though he's made so much of his life about her. She also wants him to find the confidence to start dating again and know that he's worthy of love.

The Big Event: Haley's rehearsal dinner, which is behind held in Kevin's backyard.

Most Tear-Jerking Moment: Jonathan takes Kevin to get some of his missing teeth replaced, and his whole face lights up when he smiles in the mirror for the first time. "It's my smile. It's back," he says softly.

Best Fab Five Antic: The group takes Kevin to a dance class so he can practice for his daughter's big day, and Jonathan gets so annoyed with Bobby for not paying attention. JVN takes things like dance very seriously, and Bobby should probably have known better.

Location Guide:
Bobby takes Kevin to Pottery Barn to pick out some new furniture and then Kevin heads to Fiore with Antoni to learn to cook beef short ribs. Finally, JVN takes him to Lakshmi Hair Studio for a trim.

Meet Our Hero: Tyreek Wanamaker is a 27-year-old who works for Mighty Writers in West Philly which promotes children's literacy.

Why Was He Nominated? Both Tyreek's boss Christina and his friend Tommy nominated him. He'd overcome a lot in his life and they wanted the Fab Five to help him be proud of what he'd accomplished.

The Big Event: Reconnecting with his childhood guardian and pseudo-mother Ruth after years of being estranged.

Most Tear-Jerking Moment: Tyreek admits that the the biggest question he has for Ruth is, "Does she still love me?" which is enough to break your heart. But then in the conversation, she does say she loves him, which is even more emotional.

Best Fab Five Antic:
While waiting for Tyreek to come out in his new outfit, Antoni plays a clapping game with Karamo and then excitedly announces,
"Tyreek, I just learned Patty Cake!"

Location Guide:
Bobby takes Tyreek to Anthropologie for some shameless self-promotion of his own line. Anonti brings Tyreek to the Fishtown restaurant Aether for a cooking lesson. And then he gets his hair done with Jonathan at H. Smith Shop.

Meet Our Hero: Abby Leedy is an 18-year-old climate activist for The Sunrise Movement, which is focused on climate change.

Why Was She Nominated? Abby's mom nominated her because Abby is so passionate about climate justice that she sometimes forgets to take care of herself too.

The Big Event: Abby is making a vegan dinner for her roommates and coworkers at their communal living space.

Most Tear-Jerking Moment: As a young woman, Abby shares that she worries about not being taken seriously when she's fighting for something so important. It's something many women can relate to.

Best Fab Five Antic: Jonathan finds out that Abby has never seen Sister Act, so he launches into a full plot description of the film and its sequel.

Location Guide:
Because Abby is all about the sustainable lifestyle, Bobby takes her furniture shipping at an antique store called Jinxed for some second-hand items. Then she shops with Tan at the woman-owned vintage store Made and Maker. Antoni takes her to Greensgrow Farms for some fresh produce. And then Jonathan gets her hair cut at MOKO Organic Beauty Studio.

Episode 6: DJ's "On Repeat"

Meet Our Hero: Ryan Dyer, aka DJ High Def is a property manager on the weekdays and a DJ on the weekends.

Why Was He Nominated? Ryan has been desperate to find someone and settle down, so his parents nominated him in the hopes that the Fab Five will help restore his confidence and help him dress better for the ladies.

The Big Event: He's hosting his big Italian family's weekly dinner.

Most Tear-Jerking Moment: Ryan is always comparing himself to his dad and brothers, but a heartwarming talk with dad leads to some resolution. His father says he just wants Ryan to be happy, and it's okay if he's taken a different path in life and perhaps even wants to pursue DJ-ing full time. We love a supportive father.

Best Fab Five Antic: Antoni finds a lightsaber in Ryan's house and commences having a battle... with himself. When he realizes everyone's left him behind, he protests, "Where'd everybody go?"

Location Guide:
Unlike the other episodes in this season, this one was filmed in New Jersey on the shore (it's not that far from Philly). First stop is, of course, a tanning salon called Beach Glo Tanning Studios where they meet Ryan. Later, Antoni takes him for some Italian food at Cry Baby Pasta. Bobby takes him to Home Sense for some furniture shopping, and then Karamo stops by the club he DJs called Jenks. Finally, JVN brings them back to Philly for a quick haircut at The Philadelphia Barber Company.

Episode 7: "Silver Lining Sweeney"

Meet Our Hero: 48-year-old Jennifer Sweeney is a total sweetheart. She was a stay-at-home mom for years before her husband was diagnosed with ALS. Now she's his primary caregiver and the primary income earner. Plus, she's still doing a ton at home for her three daughters.

Why Was She Nominated? Her daughters signed her up for the show because they see how selfless she is. They want her to also be able to focus on herself.

The Big Event: Jennifer thinks she's throwing a college send off party for one of her children, but her family plans on turning it into a party all about Jennifer.

Most Tear-Jerking Moment: The reality is that ALS is a tough illness, and Jennifer knows that she might not have a lot of time with her husband left. She breaks down in tears over the idea of losing him and her children moving out and on with their lives. "I just don't want this to be a fairytale and wake up and they'll all be gone," she says. Wow, everyone's crying now.

Best Fab Five Antic: Karamo finds a pair of Jennifer's short-shorts in her closet and puts them on for a pretend runway walk.

Location Guide:
Tan takes Jennifer to Skirt to buy some new clothes. Then, because she's Polish, Antoni brings her to Czerw's Polish Kielbasa to try her hand at making some of the food (and eating it). Karamo goes on a nature hike with her in Wissahickon Valley Park. And then JVN gets her hair done at Salon Vanity.

The Big Event: It's the soft open of his new restaurant.

Most Tear-Jerking Moment: The family's oldest daughter has been estranged from her parents for over a year because of cultural differences in how she wants to live her life. Karamo helps facilitate a conversation between father and daughter and reconnects her with the family.

Best Fab Five Antic: At the very end of the episode, Karamo gives some tips on connecting with your kids, and his own sons make an appearance. Their group hug at the end is so sweet.

Meet Our Hero: Lilly Yi is a pediatrician who recently finished residency and is also raising a young daughter with her husband Jon.

Why Was She Nominated? Lilly's husband Jon nominated her because he sees how hard his wife works and how much guilt she carries for not always being home with their daughter. He's hoping the Fab Five can cheer her up a bit and help her figure out that work-life balance.

The Big Event: She's starting a new job at her dream medical practice.

Most Tear-Jerking Moment: Because she's not always home, Lilly says that sometimes she feels like she's intruding on her daughter's fun time with dad by inserting herself into the equation. Karamo will have none of that and encourages her to join in on a kids pottery event that Jon is at with Annabelle, their daughter. Seeing the family gave fun together is so heartwarming.

Best Fab Five Antic: When Antoni brings pizza by for the guys to enjoy, Karamo full on jumps up and down while shouting, "Pizza! Pizza! Pizza!" Same.

Location Guide:
Lilly buys clothes with Tan at the elegant department store Boyds, and then she makes pizza with Antoni at the mega famous Pizzeria Beddia. Why Was He Nominated? Nate's ex girlfriend Kristin nominated him along with two of his clients. They want him to get help updating his gym, learning to ask for help, and putting less pressure on himself.

The Big Event: Re-opening his gym after Bobby updates it and redoes his branding.

Most Tear-Jerking Moment: For a long time, Nate wasn't comfortable showing his hair to anyone because he was starting to lose it in some spots. But JVN helps him get an amazing haircut and the way Nate looks at himself in the mirror afterwards will bring a tear to anyone's eye. He finally feels confident again.

Best Fab Five Antic: At the end of the episode, which is also the end of the season, Jonathan shaves off his iconic mustache. It was bittersweet to see it go, but we're happy JVN brought us along on the journey.
