We Tried The KKW Beauty Body Foundation — & Here's Our Honest Opinion

When Kim Kardashian West started teasing her "ultimate body-perfecting secret" earlier this month, it was safe to assume that the release would join the ranks of shimmery body illuminators that have recently hit the market for summer. What we didn't expect was a full-coverage foundation line designed for all the skin except your face, along with three loose shimmer powders and an oversized buffing brush.

Since then, the before-and-afters demonstrating the product have been virtually inescapable. Our Instagram feeds are now just videos of foundation dripping onto legs and arms — including two notable clips of Kim completely covering the psoriasis on her legs and her grandma Mary Jo disguising the veins on her hands.

But because we're skeptics — and the social media posts looked like absolute sorcery — we knew we had to give the product a try ourselves. So we asked a few Refinery29 staffers to pick out their shades and put the Skin Perfecting Body Foundation formula to the test. They share their honest opinions, ahead.

At Refinery29, we’re here to help you navigate this overwhelming world of stuff. All of our market picks are independently selected and curated by the editorial team. If you buy something we link to on our site, Refinery29 may earn commission.

"While the instructions don't claim to cover tattoos, I still wanted to see if it was possible — not to mention, see how the foundation looked on someone who has ink." — Tiffany Diane Tso, Freelance Crime and Culture Writer

"I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect, but after applying the body foundation generously over my arm, and making sure to slather it over my tattoos, it became pretty obvious that it wouldn’t cover them up completely. I think the coverage would work for small marks or evening out your skin tone, and it went on quite evenly and smoothly, but it’s definitely not opaque enough to cover anything substantial up. I did like the way it made my skin look more even and smooth in photos, so that might be the only occasion I would use the product. It did stain my shirt a little bit, so be careful!" — Tso

"I'd be lying if I said that Kim K's videos of applying the body foundation weren't more convincing than the OxiClean infomercials. I immediately knew that I wanted to try it out on my chest area where I have some acne and redness." — Thatiana Diaz, Beauty Writer

"I started applying the foundation by swiping it on with my fingers, which wasn't giving the maximum coverage. So I switched to stippling it on with a brush and it made all the difference. I blended it out to my shoulders, neck, and arms and was left with a Photoshop-like finish that I couldn't believe with my eyes; it was as if I used a smoothing edit tool in real life. It didn't transfer once it set, but I did get some of the foundation on my clothes while applying, so I would advise doing this naked. Overall, I definitely feel like I need to keep this around for special events." — Diaz

"A couple years ago, I started to notice a few blue veins popping up on my upper thighs. I don’t let it stop me from wearing shorts or sporting a bikini in the summer, but no matter how much I scrub or run on the treadmill, those little spider veins won’t disappear. I was hoping this KKW body makeup could help give me some coverage." — Jessica Cruel, Deputy Beauty Director

"Using a dense brush, I smeared the product onto my upper thighs and down my calves to cover my KP spots, too. I set the entire area with powder. It felt sticky at first, but after a few minutes, I started to sip the KKW Kool-Aid. My legs looked like I’d put on two pairs of stockings, à la Beyoncé, and I was feeling myself.

"When I got home later that night, I didn’t want to take any chances of ruining my white sheets, so I showered. The water from the spray did nothing. I started in with body wash, and brown puddles started to form. Then I did another go with a shower oil and more came off. When I got out, I did one more pass with a white cotton pad soaked in toner and there was still foundation on it. This body makeup does exactly what it claims: It covers imperfections and makes legs look glowy, but if I can’t take the stuff off, I’m better off spending my money on a spray tan." — Cruel

"Not until this challenge did I realize that I've been walking around for three weeks with foundation that doesn't match my neck?! Screw you, bathroom lighting. The KKW Beauty body foundation blended it out perfectly, but it was not a quick or easy process. My arms got tired after 15 minutes of rubbing the formula onto my limbs and chest — I can see why Kim hires someone to do this job for her." — Cat Quinn, Beauty Director

"I ended up rubbing this from my neck to my toes and setting my legs with translucent powder. That is key. My desk was covered in bronze smudges from my arms, but my legs didn't budge — and there was no transfer to my clothes, my white sheets, or my workout pants after a long sweaty run. It didn't even drip when I stood under a hot shower, but it definitely took two passes of body scrub to get it all off and I still feel like there's a little left over on my thighs.

"That said, the color and finish look great, like I just got a spray tan. It's also slightly sticky like a spray tan — and, speaking of, with the amount of work this application requires, I would be a lot happier if it also bronzed my skin in the process. Throw some DHA in the next formula, Kim!" — Quinn

"I won't lie — I was fully prepared to hate this product because, in all honesty, I'm not the biggest fan of body makeup. Smearing anything on my body other than lotion seems extremely extra to me. But I decided to give it a try on my legs. After years of shaving, they tend to look a little splotchy with hair stubs. I've never thought to use a complexion product to cover them, but I was curious to see what this body foundation could do." — Aimee Simeon, Beauty Writer

After using KKW Skin Perfecting Body Foundation In Tan

"Even though I would never use this product regularly, my legs don't look as bad as I anticipated. I like the coverage and the thick consistency of this formula. It made my complexion look even and bronze. However, the shade Tan was just a tad bit too orange for me. Perhaps, Kim should consider expanding her range with different undertones? I didn't set my legs with powder, and I felt like the color transferred slightly onto my fingers whenever I touched my legs. So, I probably would only use this for a special occasion where my skin is showing — and my outfit is super cheap." — Simeon

"From the jump, I was skeptical about using a body foundation. The thought of having to put on even more makeup seemed daunting, but the videos were pretty convincing. I decided to test it out on my arms because, for as long as I can remember, I’ve had these little red bumps on the back of them." — Katie Cruz, Associate Social Media Editor

"This foundation covered those bumps right up. The foundation did have a red-ish undertone, so it left my bare hand looking a bit orange, but overall it smells good, goes on easy, and passes the tissue test (it didn’t rub off!). Needless to say, I can see myself using this in the future for days I’m feeling self-conscious about my marks." — Cruz

"Normally when I take photos where my legs are visible, I edit out the two scars on the front of my calf and ankles. I was excited to test out this body foundation to see if it would actually cover those spots completely." — Raven Baker, Associate Social Media Editor

"I was surprised by the coverage this provided. It definitely needed a moment to dry, but once it did, there was no staining on my clothes. It also went on more evenly with a brush than with my hands, but make sure to brush gently. Now I won’t have to erase the scars on my legs in my summer photos." — Baker
