This $30 IKEA Hack Will Upgrade Your Entire Apartment

My infatuation with covering everything in wallpaper started back in 2006, when I opened an issue of domino featuring then-rising interior designer Nick Olsen. His teeny-tiny New York apartment was the pinnacle of Do-It-Yourself chic, the centerpiece of which was a cheap IKEA coffee table swathed in marbleized wallpaper. You'd never have guessed it if the article didn't say so, and I was completely smitten. Then, designer Lynn Leonidas's cocktail table DIY came onto my radar, and I knew the time had come. In honor of Olsen's original, and in the spirit of tapping into the zeitgeist, I came up with my own hack using the $19.99 LACK coffee table plus glue and a little patience. Below, all the things you'll need for a tricked-out table that no guest will ever guess costs less than date night at the movies.

Step 1: I measured and cut sample swatches of Michele Varian's boho diamond wallpaper to fit each surface, and slowly adhered them with Mod Podge, wrapping each leg individually before screwing them onto the table. The LACK comes with a lower ledge insert that I opted to leave out for a more streamlined look. Step 2: Next, I taped the outer edges of the tray and measured the dimensions of the inset surface in order to apply wallpaper there as well. Then, I painted the handles and sides of the tray black and let dry. Step 3: Lastly, I covered the table and the inside of the tray with a coat of Polyurethane for a final finish. All it needs now is a Champagne cocktail, set of cards and a cheese plate.
