My morning leading up to the Martin Grant show was anything but romantic. I had just been abandoned by a certain beau on our anniversary and a Paris photog had caught me stuffing a tartine into my mouth in a depressed binge-eating spree prior to the show. I was still floating in a down-with-the-world doldrum before the first look descended down the runway — a delightfully short, navy, drop-waist dress with a spectacularly orbital gold collar — the stuff space-age dreams are made of.
In fact, short and sweet was the name of the day, whether it was in the form of a belted skirt-and-jacket combo or a sexy trench coat with enough of a slit to add a little mystery. Better yet, pockets adorned everything — they were utterly covetable on tweed shorts and insouciantly elegant when added to a white shift with peplum flaring at the waist. By the time an origami dress came out, the hem dramatically shortened in the front to reveal pants underneath, I didn't even go into the age-old pants-over-dresses: should we or shouldn't we? debate. Grant had reminded me that a beautiful goddess dress — all sheer panel and go-get-it-girl swagger — can change your whole day…and isn't that what the romance of dressing up is all about?
