Rachel Comey Gets Fancy On Us For Spring ’13, But Still Keeps It Real

The Rachel Comey girl is a very specific sort of woman, and at the designer's show at Pier 59 last night, the audience was full of them, seated shoulder to shoulder, wearing soft day dresses, wooden-soled shoes, purposely shapeless tunics, and just a touch of jewelry (no arm parties for these chicas).
As predictable as it may be, that's one of the reasons why we love Rachel so much — as Rachel girls ourselves, each collection is a like rediscovering what we love about our own closets.
For this spring '13 season, Rachel focused more on fitted dresses, embellishments, and fanciful details usually indicative of evening wear, but they were made in soft cottons and linens and paired with her sensible sandals and a new glasses collaboration with Prism. True to the Rachel DNA, dressing up is no fun unless you can dress it down, too.
Standout items were in a similar is-this-for-day-or-night? vibe, with a metallic shell short eliciting little gasps from the audience, and dresses printed with a graphic that looked like light shining through a piece of submerged stained glass. With a ragtag balearic band ringing out island jams, it was hard not to feel like you were at your friend's backyard barbecue, sipping champagne in mugs, hiking up your long skirts so you can dance with your friends to "Hot Cheetos & Takis."
