The Humble Grilled Cheese Has Serious Star Power

illustrated by Louisa Cannell.
We have a clever chef and a bad gambling habit to thank for the humble sandwich. When Fourth Earl of Sandwich John Montagu was desperate for a snack that wouldn't interfere with his game during a 24-hour gambling streak, the result was everyone's favorite one-handed bite. Sandwiches have come a long way since, whether you're putting a new twist on an old recipe or checking out the newest specialty shop, the go-to menu offering is a classic for a reason.
Still, few live up the simple genius that is the grilled cheese. Gooey, overflowing melted cheese between two perfectly toasted, buttery slices of bread — we're hungry just thinking about it. So it should come as no surprise that National Grilled Cheese Day is kind of a big deal around here. In honor of the special day, we rounded up the most famous grilled cheeses. It's not their taste, but the people eating them that deem them worthy of star power. Click on to see Hollywood's hottest grilled cheeses.
