The Emmys are the unofficial kickoff to the hallowed time known to all as awards season. With this annual tradition comes many well-known rituals: celebrities promoting their latest [insert: project, book, TV show, energy drink], Ryan Seacrest sweating profusely on the red carpet, hard-hitting questions about who someone is wearing, and the awkward feeling we get watching E!'s head-to-toe outfit camera. While we tune in and watch these familiar events unfold with the appropriate amount of eye-rolling, we endure them for one reason and one reason alone — to see how the ladies of the red carpet turn it out. And they definitely delivered.
This year continued the slow, gradual shift we've been seeing: hair and makeup that doesn't fit the homogenous siren-red lips, cat-eye liner, and Old Hollywood waves that have dominated the red carpets of yore. Instead, we saw orange lips, blunt bobs, purple shadow, and even some natural hair (bring it, Teyonah Parris). There was also a more subdued glamour than we've seen in years past — which is not to say the looks weren't showstoppers. There were plenty of red carpet appearances that had us emitting the joyous, "Ooh, she looks good," and, "Damn, girl."
Ahead, we've rounded up the best hair and makeup looks from the night. If this red carpet is any indication, it's going to be one helluva season.
