What's better than a book of DIYs? One that pairs each project with a hilarious story that will have you laughing out loud from behind your glue gun. Launching today from one of L.A.'s coolest DIY-ers is just that, a collection of rad projects and funny stories to match.
Kate Albrecht, better known as Mr. Kate, is one of SoCal's most successful lifestyle hyphenates (blogger-designer-DIYer, and now author), and her first book of easy home, beauty, and fashion projects, A Hot Glue Gun Mess, drops today. But the best part? Many of the stories center around our unpredictable city.
"I grew up in L.A., and it is a crazy and wonderful place to live, but you are exposed to a lot of bizarre situations and people," Albrecht told us. "In this book, I highlight a lot of those crazy situations, like finding out my best friend is a high-priced hooker, all in an effort to have a good laugh at the weirdness of an L.A. upbringing. I think every L.A. girl will identify with at least one of these stories, and if you're not from L.A., it's always fun to be a voyeur of the rich and cray cray."
To celebrate the launch, Albrecht shared one of the most impactful projects from the book with us: an easy-to-make canopy perfect for an L.A. home, as it can hang just about anywhere, like over your bed or outside for a party. You'll have to buy the book for the funny story that accompanies this one, but we'll give you a little hint: It was inspired by a trip to Capri, Italy, for Albrecht's mother's 60th birthday, and ends with Albrecht cleaning up after the birthday girl's raging toga party, complete with fornication in the pool and plenty of hungover vomiting the next day.
Was her mom pissed she told this particular story? "I'm blessed that my mom has an exceptional sense of humor and the ability to laugh at herself," Kate told us. "She said, and I quote, 'Since it was a big blackout, with no pictures, this is a good way of reminiscing.'"
