This Designer Just Shrunk Down Her Collection (Sorta)

At first glance you might assume this is “Honey, I shrunk the ready-to-wear,” but that’s not exactly the case for Tia Cibani. The New York designer has created her first designs specifically for tikes, and instead of toning down the daring trends she champions on the runway — like caped dresses or oversized shoulders — she’s merely translating them for a smaller (okay, much smaller) customer.

Cibani finds herself in some impressive company with this new project. Not only do brands like Stella McCartney, Burberry, and Gap offer up toddler-sized designs so impressive we can’t help but want them for ourselves, but with brands like J.Crew hiring a four-year-old to weigh in on their pint-size designs, there's no better proof that there's no age limit when it comes to a love of bold fashion. Cibani's namesake line follows the same belief.

“I feel that the children's wear market tends to veer towards either basic or frilly-kiddish,” she tells us of the current market, adding that her designs will appeal to kids for their fun shapes and bright colors. Of course, another major attraction of the collection is how similar the styles are to the original line that have appeared on the runway in the past. "The collection is not intended for Mom and child to wear together," Cibani clarifies, "but can definitely do that if the Mom should be inspired." The whole range is priced from $90 to $190 and will be sold in select children's boutiques and on the Tia Cibani website.
