Emma Stone’s Role In Aloha Looks Promising For Women In Hollywood

Things are about to get real name-droppy, because Aloha is nothing if not a star-studded feature. Cameron Crowe's Aloha is the story of Brian Gilcrest  (Bradley Cooper), a military contractor who's revisiting the place of his career highlights. While he's there, he runs into former flame Tracy (Rachel McAdams), who is now married to a guy named Woody (John Krasinski.) Since Gilcrest has a history of not playing by the rules, man, he's also been assigned an Air Force supervisor Major Ng (Emma Stone). Sparks fly. Oh, and his boss is a guy played by Alec Baldwin. And, Bill Murray plays a guy named Carson Welch, who's role appears to be 50% life coach and 50% just being Bill Murray. At face value, this plot is at high risk of being cheesy. But, Stone's role as someone of import in the military feels promising, since the latest study on women in Hollywood revealed that female characters are more likely to be identified as wives or mothers, rather than their careers. Even though Cooper is the protagonist here, it's promising that Stone will play not just a love interest, but a woman in command of her practice — a professional. Of course, this is all based on a two-minute preview. We'll have to wait until its theatrical release to see if Crowe delivers. Check out the trailer below. Aloha hits theaters May 29.
