Prada To Your Tailor: Don't Worry, We Got This

Most of us don’t have the tools or the know-how to whip up a brand-new outfit from bolts of cloth and thread, but we do know how to use the contents of our closets to tell a story. And, if a piece isn't sticking to the script, we'll send it to the tailor to get doctored. Boot-cut pants get skinnified, long-length tunics get hemmed, and a midi-skirt that’s starting to feel frowsy gets trimmed to a mini.
Or, if you’re Miuccia Prada, you could just take a pair of scissors to your stuff and call it a day. Featuring skirts with torn, rough-looking bottoms where every seam and stitch was visible, Prada's spring '15 show gave off the same vibe you get wandering around a very expensive antique furniture shop full of heirloom chairs that are meant to be reupholstered. (We imagine the sticker shock will be similar, too.) But, this Milan collection doesn't need to be pinned and sewn into a new look — it's going for messy on purpose.
It also has to be one of the easiest runway looks to translate into a DIY. Grab a vintage slip or skirt and shorten with a dull scissor to get a better fray, and then send it for a tumble in the dryer for a more uneven hem. And, the next time someone asks you where you got that “interesting” skirt, just tell them you made it with a little help from Miuccia.
