Today in kick-ass news: Gloria Steinem is getting her own comic book. As the latest installment in Melissa Seymour's "Female Force" series, this 32-page book honors the feminist pioneer's contributions to gender discourse and society at large. “It has been incredible writing about Gloria Steinem," Seymour said in a statement. "She has truly devoted her life to making the world a better place for women." Other powerful females immortalized by Seymour include Hillary Clinton, Tina Fey and Ellen DeGeneres. Who needs Wonder Woman with real-world heroines like these?
Illustrated by Angel Bernuy, "Female Force: Gloria Steinem" is compact, informative, and features the colorful, playful accessibility needed to hook today's readers. It's also heartening to see a comic series — a medium still recovering from chauvinism — place smart women front and center in a way that feels genuinely inspiring and respectful.
"...I feel it makes a difference," publisher Darren G. Davis said of the series, to The Huffington Post in June. "We always tell the stories in a positive light and how the subjects learned from the difficulty. It shows people they can be anything they want to be and empowers them."
