The minute we sense the tiniest bit of breeze in the air, many of us begin to think that our dress-wearing days are behind us. Autumn is associated with chunky knits, ankle boots and trench coats, so it's easy to see why we gravitate towards tons of layers as soon as the sun bids us farewell. But we’re here to tell you that you needn't give up on one-stop shop outfits as soon as the cooler weather rolls in, with heaps of autumn-appropriate dresses making the rounds this month.
We can’t pick just one piece as our autumnal holy grail but there were a few standout trends on the catwalk this season. Of course Burberry made the case for plaid, reworking its iconic check in a darker palette on a range of wrap-style dresses. Miu Miu, meanwhile, put leather front and centre at its Paris show, pairing the heavy collared shift dress with a leather pouch and driving gloves. For those looking for something a tad more snug, Bottega Veneta showed a continued love of lightweight knits for AW20, styling long ribbed dresses with heavy soled shoes.
If none of those looks sounds like your cup of tea, perhaps turn your attention to the high street. Homing in on our long-term affection for puff-sleeve dresses, the voluminous trend is making its way into autumn, swapping sunny shades for neutral colour palettes and dark prints. Some of the best on the block include those from Zara, & Other Stories and COS, with the brands also offering their fair share of colourful printed frocks for those who aren’t ready to give up on bold statement pieces this season.
