Ciara Just Ushered In Fall’s Coolest Hair Color Trend

Ciara has done it again, dazzling her Instagram followers with a bright new hair color by stylist César DeLeön Ramirez. While Ciara tends to stick to her signature look — long, honey-blonde waves — she's been switching things up since Halloween, when she recreated hair, makeup, and fashion looks from icons like Janet Jackson and Nicki Minaj.

This week, she's ushering in what might be the biggest hair-color trend this winter: light blue. While cotton-candy pink was the breakout shade of quarantine last spring, a calming blue feels a bit more fitting for the colder, darker months of a potential second lockdown — and Ciara's pro execution has us tempted to take the plunge.

To keep up with this dynamic look, you don't need to have a pro hairstylist on call especially if you'd prefer not to make an in-person appointment. Blue is one of the rare shades that's actually easy to DIY (even Hilary Duff did it). We've rounded up our favorite at-home kits, ahead.

First: the inspiration. Two days ago, Ciara posted a photo on Instagram with dark brown hair and face-framing caramel highlights, but yesterday she surprised fans with a long, light blue wig she says she styled herself. According to Ramirez, Ciara first considered trying the color during her last month of pregnancy with baby Win for the gender reveal, but plans changed. "We didn’t end up going with that gender reveal idea, but we still had this blue wig and we figured it was the best time to start having fun with it," Ramirez recalls.

While this blue is a big departure from her usual honey blonde waves, Ramirez says it's just the start of dynamic colors in Ciara's future. "In the past we’ve done silver metallic hair for the Met Gala and a neon yellow this last Halloween when she paid homage to Cardi B, so basically Ciara can wear any color and slay it," he says. (We find it hard to argue.)

KISS Colors Tintation in Cyan

If you like to be ahead of trends, Ramirez thinks this color transition fits perfectly for the changing season, calling it a "moody and blissful blue." What's more, he says just about anyone can pull it off. "Cool tones are perfect on most skin tones during fall/winter months as we are all less tan," Ramirez explains. If you can't splurge on a unit right now, KISS delivers when it comes to dynamic demi-permanent colors: Lizzo's stylist, Shelby Swain, recently credited the brand for the star's vibrant red curls, and we can't wait to try this cyan shade.

Lime Crime Powder Hair Color Tint

Maintaining bold color isn't always easy, but Ramirez has a few pointers. "The best way to preserve color is to wash less and use a color safe shampoo like Living Proof’s Color Care shampoo and conditioner," he says. His pro-approved tip? "Pour a few drops of the color pigment into your conditioner and mix it well. Now, when you condition, it will refresh your wild color."

With such a fitting name, it's hard to image Unicorn Hair not giving you the perfect powder-blue shade. Keep in mind that the darker your hair is, the darker blue you will get; if you're looking to mimic Ciara's icy color, you'll need to bleach your hair first.

Overtone Vibrant Teal Coloring Conditioner

Overtone is the perfect treatment to try if you're a hair-dye novice: If you know how to use a hair mask, then you know how to use this. Slather it on for 10-15 minutes weekly or any time your color is looking dull; if you decide to dye a custom unit, remember it can prove to be a difficult process. "Make sure you have a lot of color because wigs suck up a lot of product," Ramirez says. "For pastel tones, I always dilute Pravana Vivid colors with clear to make them pastel — you get more product and more slip, making it easier to evenly apply the color."

GDY Lighter Daze Sky High (Blue)

Taking care of your natural hair means paying attention to the ingredients in your products. This sunflower extract-infused blue dye from Good Dye Young is the perfect shade to mimic Ciara's look and goes another step further by being vegan and cruelty-free.

If you decide to use a unit to experiment with this blue, Ramirez suggests his secret cocktail for preservation and hair growth: a few drops of Amandine Sol Botanicals Inner Glow Oil on the scalp, then a few more mixed with Vitiv Daily Hair Vitamin on the mid-shafts and ends. He explains that the oils help with dry scalp and overall scalp health, and suggests applying this "lightweight cocktail before braiding or any time your hair needs extra moisture, shine, and strength."
