See How 29Rooms Is Brought To Life

With our 10th anniversary on the horizon, there is no excuse to not celebrate. And what better way to do so (and to kick off New York Fashion Week) than by bringing Refinery29 to life with 29Rooms, an interactive, one-of-a-kind experience that you do not want to miss? We repeat: You do not want to miss this. While the interior of this event might have tons of surprises in store, we partnered with New York-based artist Hisham Akira Bharoocha to make the outside just as wild, crazy, and fun. Bharoocha, along with the girls of the Lower Eastside Girls Club, transformed the exterior of a Greenpoint warehouse with a colorful mural. It represents the many worlds and styles that collide at this fashion funhouse.

“For me, personally, [the mural] is a reference to how feelings and emotions morph into each other, and how organic shapes lead to organic thoughts," Bharoocha says of his creation. "Things that seem disparate to one person can very much be relatable to another. The mural is talking about that, but also about an abstraction of that thought process."
Bharoocha doesn’t take all the credit for the celebratory entrance to 29Rooms, though. The Lower Eastside Girls Club (a community-based initiative where girls take part in mentoring, wellness, arts, academics, and career programs) was crucial in its creation. “I gave them vague directions, and I drew outlines for them to paint into," Bharoocha says. "They could paint into the shapes and decide whether they wanted to make a pattern or create a scene.” Overall, the explosion of color and energy is the perfect welcome into this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
